Default Interest in a UK 964 sprint series?

Darin at the MLR has been running a successful sprint series for Mitsubishi Lancer's and it looks he it will be helping set up a similar series for gtr owners (looks like 15-20 people are signing up) and mentioned they may share the days with a series for porsche owners.

it's early days at he moment but if enough UK 964 folk would be up for it it we may be able to form a 964 class of our own?

No race license needed, street legal tyres etc, so quite low entry requirements. Sounds like it might cost a £130 entry per meet.

I would definitely be interested. Is this circuit racing or something else?

Sprints are usually held on purpose built venues similar to "hill climbs" - so think Goodwood festival of speed hill climb. Everyone does a few practice runs and then a flying run. Sometimes it will be a normal track but the timed section is one lap or just a section of a lap.

Why not just sign up to the Porsche Club Speed Championship? It's been running for years and I am sure that Paul & Steve at PCGB Motorsport would welcome new interest. Sure there are some fast cars out there (including Melv with his 964 Cup) which would be difficult to beat, however if there are enough of you playing you can fight out your own mini-competition. The Championship is a mix of Hill Climbs and Sprints, you simply pick your best 8 from 12 to score the overall results hence you don't have to do the Hill Climbs if you prefer the Sprints although I recommend that you try both!

Well for starters, one of the requirements for the PCGB series is a National B license.

Doc, that sounds like really awesome idea. Where do I sign - I'm most definitely in.

How many takers do we need?

Colin, I thought the club series didn't allow AWD cars which would preclude some of the interest here?

I think we'll let the thread run for a couple of days and see how many we can get, maybe re-post on the 911uk site. Then I'll get back to Darin and see what he thinks.

I think everyone will be in the same boat that they can't commit to every date that get's put forward and some venues will be too far for some to travel.

Seems like a really easy way to get into something competitive, without to much commitment in time and money. I like the idea of a pretty level playing field too, there's not much difference really in performance between most of the road going 964s on here, when you get into competing with cars built to race or sprint that's a different story.

Maybe we could convince one of the UK specialists to sponsor a trophy.

Not sure where you heard that one? All Porsches are eligible and 4wd would be welcomed as much as 2wd, in fact Nick Bayldon campaigned his 964C4 for years in the Porsche Club Speed Championship.

Please do not think that you would not be welcome in the Club Championship. Sure, there are a lot of experienced sprinters out there who will be faster, but these are the very same guys who novices need to use for help & advise on what to do at events and knowledge of the venues, these guys are the best learning tool you can have and will help you all to go faster in safety.

Yup the small group of like minded friends and cars element appeals a lot to me.

No fun when things get political, overly organised etc, etc, etc.

Thanks for the input Colin but this thread is really to ask for interest in the series that is being above and I don't want to go off track talking about the PCGB series at this stage, not wanting to diminish that series in anyway. Depending how things turn out, who knows, we may go down that road.

Many of us have talked about something like this at meets and on track days together, he are a happy and welcoming band and if we can do "our own thing" that would be great in my book.
