If it was a real RSR it is worth a fortune and is a shame but still worth a ton after repairs. Incredibly rare car.

Is it a 964 RSR? I thought the 964 RSRs were 3.8 widebodies? I can imagine that the car in question might have been built to a mechanical RSR spec of course.

For those who think it was drivers error, I'd say it's the copilots error. He is responsible for telling the driver where the next turn is, how tight and also what gear to be in. The driver likely had no idea what was coming after the left hander....

The car in the crash was a wide body and his site claims it is.

He was clearly hard on the gas all the way through up until he locked up the brakes easily had the time to realize what was directly ahead of him. I say it was a bit of both and once you lock those brakes there is no turning in.

I don't believe it's a RSR.

Their site mentions a 3.4L watercooled engine and a few other things which don't fit, and the car is missing too many RSR details.

You seem to be correct something they built apparently they list the year as 1990 and the RSR's weren't released until 1994

The left rear wheel shears off at the spokes!! Pause it at about 0:08 seconds....
The left front seems to shear off at the suspension as it looks like it's still attached to the hub as it sails by.

The news why and how is that the gas was hanging (if written correct) so he couldn't do anything but brake hard.

If you mean that the throttle was stuck open, you can always dump the clutch and allow the rev limiter to save the engine whilst you save the car and your neck, but that's probably counter intuitive when you are in race mode.

My view is that he hit the brake pedal too hard and locked up before getting enough weight transfer to the front end. I'm not ashamed to admit that I have done this myself in my 993RSR and completely "beaten" the ABS system with the speed of brake application; only in my case I only took out an old wooden fence post into a grassy field rather than a barrier and into the canal.

Here's the Youtube link...already 678,000 views!

I think he showed good skills exiting the previous turn so am in the camp that a sudden mechanical failure messed his head up before he got to the next turn.

There was an interview with the driver on the local TV, the throttle was stuck and not enough time to cutoff the engine so they hit the water barrier full throttle. This guy is a very experience rally driver.

He said damage is not that bad and they will be back next year. His reaction to the crash, translated. "Well I have a black eye and my co driver caught a cold because of the water".... Tough Flying Dutchman!

Video with interview, in dutch but some footage of the car in the workshop.

Video Interview

I can't make out too many details on my mobile device, but is the motor they show in the video the one that came out of the car? Looks like a water-cooled motor?

Okay, now watched it on my desktop. Definitely a water-cooled motor in there. You can see the coolants hardlines running forward through the trans tunnel at around 1:07 in the video.
