I own a BMW e31 and it is amazing for such rides, but am considering going from the e31 to a 964.

It depends on the cruise speed and the weather conditions. Long trips at high speed with rainy or foggy weather on crowded streets are not much fun. My 964 i very loud in the car when driving german BAB speed (200+).
Last weekend, i`d to visit my parents 350km away and i chose the volkswagen golf for that trip instead of the porsche because of rain and heavy traffic... (i think I get old)

I have done a few NE to FLA round trips in my 964(1,100miles)
Biggest issue for me is the stock seats tend to get uncomfortable after sitting for long stints...A/C and cruise works...much more comfortable then my other 911's(SC and Carrera's)

I have used my 964 C2 (stock except for H&R reds with Bilstein HD) as a daily driver for 6+ years and as mentioned above, the interior noise is high compared to new cars, or even your 840/850 due to the way the control arms are attached to the body. I find that after longer trips, I notice that I've been in a loud environment. Road noise + climate control noise = higher radio volume. My cell phone headset has to be on max volume to hear the other person.
I don't find rainy or congested areas a problem, and I'm not sure why you would. I drive mine in the rain and snow and don't find I have any issues.
Your 840/850 is a GT class car more comparable to the 928, both of which are great traveling cars and very quiet inside.

I did a 3,000 mile road trip with my son this summer in my 964. It was a blast. Proof that it was comfortable is that I never had a complaint from my 14 year old.
Having comfortable seats is key. I replaced my originals with GT3 seats and couldn't be happier.
