KTS301
After selling my '91 C2 Targa in 1996, I also sold my Bosch KTS301... and now I'm sorry I did. Yesterday I purchased a 1992 C2 Targa--a car I've been looking for since early this year. I suppose I could try to find a used KTS301, but I read elsewhere on this forum about some software developped by Rennlist members and a module available online that connects my PC to the round 19 pin connector in my car. The price makes this option very appealing expecially since a "hammer" might be difficult to find. My question, though, is does the free software in this arrangement have the "adaptation" function for a 964 the way the Bosch tool does? I always used my KTS301 on my previous 964 to do an adaptation upon reconnecting my car's battery after winter storeage. Thanks for any insights and help you can provide.

Yes, the Scantool can do adapation. The only thing it can't do is bleed the C4 AWD locks. In addition to the Scantool, you may also consider the PDT999 tool. It does all of the functions. I used a fellow Rennlister's to bleed my C4 and it worked really well.
Currently, I have a scantool and it does what I need. But if I was starting over on 964 ownership, I would buy the PDT999 since it does it all.

IMHO the PDT999 is overkill for a C2 owner unless you don't have a Windows laptop (as the PDT999 is self-contained) Tore's tool at $115 is more cost effective for C2 Owners.

Thanks for all your help, folks. I have taken into consideration what you have told me and have ordered Tore's T-OBD tool plus the round 19 pin adapter for my car. I've also downloaded the software from his website and now need to install it on my laptop. Hopefully it won't be too hard because I'm something of a klutz with technical computer stuff. If Tore's tool presents any difficulty for me on my laptop running 64 bit Vista, I'll probably order the PDT999. In any case, the overall cost even if I buy both will not come anywhere near the $2600 I spent in 1991 when I bought my "Hammer" from Stoddard.

I too have had good luck with Tore's tool. Only issue I had was forgetting to make sure I had the correct serial port selected. It is referenced in the install instructions, but being a typical male i didn't rad them. so I asked Tore and we walked through it. does the adaptation very well.

Hello guys,
Concerning this tool, does it work well with 964 and earlier 993 ? (mine is from 1994)
On Tore's instruction it is writen :
Use with 19-pin adapter
Early 993 and 964 models are equipped with a round 19-pin OBD connector. These
do not have the special K’-line for communication with the Climate Control, ABS
and Alarm control units. All communication to these units is done on the K-line,
therefore, always keep the switch in the DME position when using in the 964
or early 993.
Do you have clear explanation for this ?
My understanding is (for 964 and earlier 993 only) we only have acces to DME menu, not to the other...
I hope I'm wrong
Thanks in advance for your feedback

Mine works fine for the DME, ECU, ABS, and Tiptronic. It does the adaptation nicely. it resets fault codes. As stated above, for a C2 it is a bargain compared to any other tool. I also downloaded the OBD log tool and can watch most of the engines parameters in real time using Tore's serial adapter. I am using Win 7 at the moment, but recently purchased a smaller laptop with Win 8.1 to try to get more room in the cockpit.

993passion, I apologize for any confusion.
The freeware Scantool software supports all OBD-enabled units in our cars. However, there are some limitations. In short, this concerns 993's fitted with Porsche Drive Block immobilizer (difficulties to contact the DME) and late 993's with a 996 type of air bag control unit.
The Scantool serial adapter (and T-OBD) design made by Rennlisters, have switches to accomodate the different OBD connections in the 964 and 993. This switch is in use in the 993 only, not in the 964. It must remain in the DME position to be able to connect to the Motronic, ABS, SRS air bag, climate control CCU and PDAS systems in the 964.
Cheers,
Tore
