Default Odometer

Decided to finally tackle the problem of my odometer not working.

After reading up on the topic I thought that maybe the pod gear had dropped a cog - the reality is a bit more dramatic...

You can replace the gear or pod separately. Pelican carries them.

Odometer gears & pods for your 964 are available. Make sure you confirm the correct gear & take a look at the odometer gear replacement article as well, it's a good read.

Great thread! I just bought my first porsche and the odometer doesn't work. From reading the posted links, I believe I ruined the gears in the odometer when I pressed the pin to reset the trip meter. This is going to be my first DIY on my new to me car. Thanks for posting the links and how to. This place is a wealth of info.

I need to replace the bigger of the 2 gears in my speedometer. I had replaced the small gear about 5 years ago and its worked fine until now. The gear I need to replace is totally gone in a dozen or more pieces so no chance to count the teeth. I have a 91 TIP. has anybody else replaced the bigger gear on this year and TIP ? They have a 16 or 17 tooth choice and there is zero chance of counting anything. The small gear is 15 teeth if that matters.

Ok so I called odometer gear today and they told me if your eaten up big gear is reddish like mine its a 17 tooth gear. If it is blue/green its the 16 tooth gear. Very helpful guys to talk to.

Hi Rhyd911,

My car is 964 Singapore & what size of gear & pod did you order? I'm guessing mine is 15 tooth gear & 17 tooth small pod based on Pelican odometer gear table.

Hi JoriJori,
I ordered the 15 tooth gear with the 17 tooth pod.

As you can see, mine had pretty much disintegrated with all of the pieces of red plastic embedding themselves in and around just about all the gears in the odometer mechanism.

Very therapeutic couple of hours digging each bit out using just a pin and perseverance...

Hi Rhyd, thanks for the reply. One last question, how did you remove the needle/pointer?

I've done the clockface, the toughest part was putting back the outer bezel to the housing. Clock hands were not that hard to remove, just pull straight out.

iirc, applied gentle vertical pressure to the hub of the indicator needle directly perpendicular to the face and it popped off.

I just finished this repair. Following the instruction found on odometergears, the needle popped right off. I reassembled everything except putting the bezel back on because I want to make sure everything works correctly before refolding the bezel. Winter here so the checkout will have to wait. Now, back to the suspension rebuild - all new bushings are going in.
