Engines should be heard and not seen. I personally don't care what it looks like when it's doing its job of propelling us down the road.

Frankly, IMHO, all air-cooled VW, Porsche engines have pretty much sucked in the visceral 'looks' dept.
(Especially so if your baby duck-like imprinting was on carbed V blocks. Anything north of 6 will do. Straights, too, but to a palpably lesser degree.)

...unless you have an engineer's indifference to visceral appearances. Then all becomes clear... that these engines are works of efficacy, first and foremost.

Looks? Please. Only that a mother could love.

The Porsche engineers are human, not gods, who made a great engine, but the up top plumbing and wiring is a disorganized mess. There was just zero effort put into the engine bay looks department.

That being said, I still love my car. We are the caretakers now of this vehicle so we can bitch and moan among ourselves

Yep, that IC is SO much more aesthetically pleasing . . . . . .

Think Princeton has it nailed :

There was a VW lad from the UK meant to be building a 964 project with a smoothed / clean engine bay (tucked hoses and cables etc).

This was at the end of last year tho and no photos have emerged yet (that I know of).

I'll continue the search...

Love that Singer engine heat pad. Wonder what material it's made from?
