Interesting VIN find...
I was browsing Ebay and found this 964 for sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-...item2a2ad23c80
Wait, no! This one:

I applaud the seller for taking all those detailed photos of the car. You rarely see something like that in a listing and the photos are very revealing. The one thing that made an impression on me was the ROW VIN in the trunk:

It's a WP0ZZZ VIN!! Never seen one on a US car. More importantly, the last 8 digits match the VIN elsewhere on the car and on the COA:

So my question is, was that a ROW car that was at some point converted for the US? I'm thinking that's what happened and likely before it left the factory...
What do you guys think?

As far as I know, the ROW-type VIN (with ZZZ) is in that location on all cars. I know for certain Porsche did this with the 944-series cars.
I'm assuming it's because the bare shells were essentially the same irrespective of country of destination, they could later apply the country-specific VIN once the shell was assigned to a purchase order.

The ROW VIN you spotted should be in the range 400001 to 407850 for it to be a ROW C2/C4 coupe for that model year. Seeing as it starts 41, it still fits a US VIN. My guess would be that the technician at the factory wasn't quite awake when he stamped that one out?
This is correct. When I bought my 964 fron CA and took it home this was a mistery I put pretty much time on. As far as i got was that on the production line it was decided which market the car was built for AFTER the ID stamp was out into the chassi..
I have a cali import in the UK it has ZZZ in the trunk else where it has WPOC. also on the documents issued by DVLA (driving agency) they have put the WPOC vin on the vehicle log book.
I was once transporting the car on a trailer late at night with my 4x4 and got stopped by police as they wanted to check everything out and by everything I mean everything they started with the 964 and where confused why the VIN was different in places. then they started on my 4x4 finally finishing on my trailer checking the vin on that. I was relieved when they finally gave me the green light to carry on..
