Late to the party
Hello all. I've been here for quite some time. Been a Porsche fanatic since my uncle took me to Three Point Motors in early 1983 to see THREE brand new 930 Turbos (a light metallic blue/blue sport seat car stole my automotive heart). FYI, 930s were available in Canada during the 1980-1985 hiatus in the US.
Fast forward to today. I currently own two 993 C2 coupes, both 6-speeds with some subtle mods to maintain stock appearance. I've decided I want a 964. Too bad, so has everyone else. Good, lower mile (to me, sub 100K at this point), C2 coupes are simply not there anymore.
I came VERY close to selling BOTH of my 993s (and adding a little cash) to buy a Maritime Blue 964RS (M002 spec) that was imported recently. Too much car for "only 911" (the car had a cage, harnesses, and CS cloth seats), too many bucks to keep one of my 993s AND the RS. In short I realized that what I would most like is one of my 993s and a similar mileage 964C2 manual coupe.
In my search over the last six weeks I've explored three cars. One was at a dealer that just didn't seem too interested, one was just over 100k miles but didn't quite "work" for me with its colour combo, the other is still there but I'm worried its just not quite what I need ( the car is a 1991 with 30K miles in a perfect colour combo but $40K).
What's the point of this thread? Nothing really, just venting my frustration at missing this boat. 964s were CHEAP just a couple years ago. Not anymore. I still think a 964C2 and a 993C2 are a perfect Porcshe pair.

Exactly!
It's funny, when I was younger (I'm now 43) my dream 911 was always a Turbo or Motorsport derived model (RS, GT etc), as I get older I'm more interested in the most basic model. A rear drive, manual, two wheel drive coupe is the definitive 911 to these eyes. And the later 964 and 993 cars are just about the perfect mix of classic style with modern performance and safety features (ABS is a God-send when driving "spiritedly" on unfamiliar roads). Of course I also want a 3.2 Carrera but that will have to wait.
The 964, IMHO, has the mix nailed (the view down the hood of the RS, along with its rawness are forever fixed in my head. Magic).

Good luck with the hunt !
It can be frustrating AND satisfying when you find the right one.
I looked for 6 months on the usual spots.....
Here, Pellican, Auto Trader etc. Good cars are snatched up in minutes if the price is fair. Dealers will offer "iffy" cars at high prices.
What worked for me was a slowly enlarging Craigs List search. Close enough to check in person without major cost.
Found this '92 manual coupe 600 miles away, north of San Francisco.
Seller was asking way too much for the milage, but the car looked solid. Drove up and saw the car, arrainged for a PPI which came back good and haggled a bit on price and needed fixes.
3 weeks later the seller called. AC fixed, smog check done.
Flew up and drove her home !
Moral is, good cars are out there, shop outside the high traffic sites and work with the owner. I got the feeling that all of the other people who inquired about his car tried to low ball the price rather than work with him.

^^^Love your car. Your house number looks like it could be altered a bit to better suit the car (someone pshopped my address in the past to finish 993).
I love so many different kinds of cars but 911s, air-cooled ones in particular, just hit the spot for me. Awesome.

Hey Tim, it's great to see you joining the 964 ranks. I know your dilemma...I sold my 993 to a first-time owner in Calgary last year, and bought my RSA. As much as I loved my 993, I never got over selling my previous 964 in 2009 and it just felt right to get back into one. Best of luck with the search...let us know what you are looking for and I will keep my eyes open for you around here. They are definitely getting harder to find locally- I know of 3 guys looking for stockish RSAs that have had no luck for months.
Cheers,
Chris

It is encouraging to see all the enthusiasm for 964's.
I started my search for 964 a few months ago originally looking for a C2. After looking chasing several leads, and looking at one that was hastly reconditioned and over priced at a dealer, a clean looking C$ found me. I ended up picking it up two weeks ago. While it is it too early to tell if I got a good deal, it is still great to open the garage and see it there.

The party's only just warming up, welcome!
What he said ^
A few years ago, when posters came on to RL looking for a 964, the stock advice was: buy on condition first, C4 or C2 of less importance, unless you see alot of snow or see alot of track.
Then, the 964RS prices went off, and behind them C2 prices..which is fine for the cognoscenti, but the rest of us know that ANY 964 can be lightened and tightened to give the majority of the RS experience, without the fear of using an 'appreciating asset' and the dental bills.
So maybe don't rule out test driving a nicely set up 964C4: they arent the heavy, numb steering, understeering also-ran that the current market place might be trying to imply..

You could always give this one a look-see. Price seems too good to be true, but you never know.

Best of luck Tim. Hope you find the car you're looking for.

Tim-
Thanks for joining the party. As much as I love 993's it takes away nothing to also love the 964. Same family, different birth order...
I love my RSA and if I could only have one I think the 993 would go first although I would probably just do a passenger seat delete on one and make it possible to live in one before I would do that....
PM me I have a car that might be of interest.

Its hard to split hairs with the 964 and the 993, other than cost. They are different but equally satisfying in different ways. I find myself going to my 964 as much as the 993, not so much as the GT3.
964 market has revived the past 6 months for sure.
