Another to consider would be the Joe Gibbs DT50 15W50. Raby and L&N Eng. approved.

 

Seems to be $8/qt is the going rate for these oils. I'm about to embark in doing oil changes on my own so definitely interesting to hear what everyone is currently using. I've considered Brad Penn as it's suggested here quite often so a call to Steve may be in short order.

 

I use either.
Valvoline VR1 20W50 or
Brad Penn 20W50 or
Mobil 1 15W50

Will probably go back to BP 20W50 now that my mechanic carries it. That is once I deplete my stock of M1 and VR1

 

I should have asked originally about filters as well. Anything special? OEM?

Also, do you guys have any opinion about running a petroleum based cleaner in the oil for a little while before changes? I used to do this with Seafoam in my wife's old A4 1.8t one day before every oil change. That engine had a notorious sludge problem, so that was really my point, and it worked well. With the oil system being double important on the 964, it seems like making sure it stays clean and flowing well wouldn't be a bad idea.

 

Mahle OC54.... no need to use anything else. I also use two bottles of Chevron Techron, in the full tank before the oil change.

 

did you mean fuel tank? i actually did seafoam in the fuel when i filled up last week. now wondering if i should add it to the oil...

Yes fuel tank, I don't add anything to the oil, others may chime in.

 

I also use Brad Penn 20W50. I source it locally at Competition Sales of Dallas. They recently relocated near the Addison Airport.

I buy a couple of cases at a time. You need 10-11qts and it's good to have extra oil on hand.

The best way to do this is to send off your oil for an oil analysis. It's like $30 I think, and they'll give you a report card on the condition of your used oil. From here you can determine our best change interval for your car.

Your Porsche has an oil cooler that "stores" 2 quarts of oil .
If you use a "petroleum based cleaner in the oil" and the oil cooler thermostat opens , you will have cleaner in the oil after the oil change .
I would not do a cleaner on a 964 if I was not going to do an oil cooler and hoses drain also .

BP20/50 and I have it shipped all the way to the Middle East where we have plenty of oil.

It is still cheaper thaan the M1 15/50 even with shipping.

In my previous 911 I used M1 oil without any problems.

In both cases an oil change every 6 months... Which comes down to about every 3500 miles.
Oil filter Mahle or Knecht OC54 (same filter and both brand names are on the box in EU).

 

Another "+1" for Brad Penn 20/50. For those of us in western Canada a good source is Pacific Western Performance.
