Default Intermittent Convertible Top Issues

I recently replaced my latching motors with REBUILDs and the top (After ~ 1 month) intermittently stops in ~ 5-6 positions when opening and closing the top.

Usually about the same location each time.

Anyone have issue(s) similar to this one with a solution?

Cold Solder joints on the controller?

Thank you for ant feed back,
Dale

Hi and greetings from Finland. I strongly suggest that you replace your controller box asap. My low-mile ´92 Cab with manually operating top had some issues last summer when unlocking / locking the top. The system became completely dead without any warning. I removed the controller box (real pita due to its location behind the gauge cluster) and checked it out - several bad solder joints found. I re-soldered all bad joints and voilá - works again. I´m pretty sure that a bad controller is one major reason for some top mechanism malfunctions causing main top bows breaking etc.

Mine is in manual mode now (as many 964 Cab owners has) but I have some thoughts to restore the electrics some day. I will surely renew the controller as I have seen what is inside an old one.

If it stops about the same location each time, I would look at the wiring harness where it flexes to accommodate the hood movement rather than at the controller/module which is fixed. Logic is: relays etc don't know what the hood position is unless at end of travel.

Faulty solderings on the controller PCB is a common issue. The output connector pins will break loose. It's an easy fix for a guy with some experience with a soldering iron.
Cheers,
Tore

That was exactly the case on my controller.
