Like I said above my friend. I had not owned or worked on a 996. In regards on how well the newer cars are taken care of I still stand by my statement. Please let me know why a 996 value is dropping? My concern is a master mechanic friend decided these cars are not worth the hassle. I would tell the poster to drive a 89 carrera G50. Solid car

i would attribute the value drop of the 996 vs aircooled due to looks, watercooled lack of historic prestige, drop in build quality and negative press reviews, not maint costs. I will say, 996 is the only 911 i havent owned so i could be talking total cr@p.

Normally cars that are harder to repair, high parts prices and dependability will cause a car to drop in value.

For example. A 993 value drops considerably when it 100k. Friend if mine who owns an exotic car dealer won't touch them.

He will never sale a boxster again unless it has a factory warranty. You can guess why

My 928 s4. It's timely for repairs, parts are very high ( volume of sale) and has a mile of wiring. Oh and sale price.

My mechanic has spoken to several mechanics across the country about the 996. He decided to stay away from this model. I doubt he will ever work on a 997.

Simple economics of supply and demand is creating value stability in older porsche models. Porsche was never a mass producing auto manufacturer until the Boxster was launched in the late 90s.

997s are following the same depreciation curve as the 996. 997.2 will hold value a little bit better because the world's economy **** the bricks in 2008 and supply of 997.2s were not produced like the 997.1s. The 9A1 engine faults has started to show up now with its weak links.

All cars are a commodity item including 993s if driven. Only air cooled garage queens are commanding a premium due to supply. The rest all still depreciate.

Okay the price point right now would indicate the person purchasing does not have a large amount of disposable income which is okay if you are a mechanic or do not need the car for daily transportation. A toyota or f150 is a good daily driver from a cost per mile perspective 964 or 996 n

Ive had many daily drivers newer more than 15 years old in the past 3 years and im not a mechanic. Ive been able to keep my car on the road without huge expense and few incidents. (many thanks to rennlist for a lot of easy fixes) I dont think scare mongering people away from 964's is valid - more appropriate would be the advice in how to make sure u get a good one and not a potential basket case.[/QUOTE]

Is this a good daily driver for someone with a budget of 20k, not at all...964 or 996. Flame away.

After reading some of the links with this story, it seems there is quite an industry built up around 996 failures, looks like a great choice if you are into err, adventure...

996: https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...s-learned.html

997 too, plenty of stories like this one (and check the list warranty claims before it grenaded a few weeks out of warranty): https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...-my-story.html

Its all pretty sad reading, for lovers of this marque like myself, and some mass production and corner cutting/'lean technology' was for probably needed for survival.. but I'd suggest simple greed had alot to do with it too.

I just wouldnt buy a modern 911 with these stories around. There are maybe some 996's coming through now that have been re-engineered by the aftermarket, I guess that would be the wisest choice..

Yes, it can be done, but not my choice for dialy driving, at least in my neck of the woods.
Driving my 964 daily turned it into a more reliable car than when I bought if from the 1st owner three years ago. He only drove the car 5 times per year and there was always something minor going on.

Every mile not driven in a 964 is a mile wasted... you can't get it back, ever!

Yes, 964 has my vote.

I'm not sure if 996 owners get this pleasure, but EVERY DAY I get a smile, wave or thumbs up from others. The world just seems to love these cars. That's a big thrill for me, and so if thats a factor for you, I think the 964 will elicit more adoration.

Both cars are true 911s, so you can't lose if you get a good one of either. It just depends on what you want from your 911?

996 - Transportation, with a focused driving feel. It's something that feels special, but not too precious and old school. It doesn't take over your life. Get in and drive, wash it when you can. Something you won't be too afraid to park anywhere. You forget to look back at it. You think about what your next Porsche will be?

964 - Your senses are alive and you search for driving lines at every turn. You think about it before, during, and after the drive. It becomes part of your life, it's special to you and not easily replaced. It's old and fun to master, and seems to get better as the years go by. You always look back at it! It's a keeper.

If you care nothing about owning the ugliest 911 ever made, buy the 996.
