Default Sydney 2012 Porsche Concours Report

The forecast was for a 20% chance of rain (and it did rain last year), so it seemed like deja vu that the concours opened under grey skies today.

But...after the epic detailing effort in the past week, the 964 looked pretty damn sharp as she took her place in the row allotted to the 964 and 993 series.

With some illustrious company too. My immediate neighbour is a 30th Anniversary widebody, with a recent upgrade to 3.8 Litres and looking resplendent on 993 RS Speedlines.
\

Next to that, was the holiest of holies, a 993 Carrera RS Clubsport. Just beautiful...could stare at this all day.

On the other side, was a 993 Turbo S, the hotter version of the game-changing 993 AWD Turbo.

Next to that, was the 964 Targa that would get 3rd place in the 964/993 class that day.

This was super-duper immaculate.

I'm also super-stoked that a fellow Rennlister won the 964/994 class at the end of the day in this forest green beauty. Last year, all three top places in the class were taken by 993s, so this year's result is a great start

But before we get onto how I went, let's have a look at what else was around today

The car that would win the day, was the 944S2, which won the Concours Masterclass outright. I think this was a top placegetter this year, but deservedly won the day outright.

Insanely clean!

Second place in Masterclass, was this lovely 356B

It had all the period knick-knacks...like a Porsche towel!

No less impressive inside

Moving right along, this '68 911T got 1st place in the Open Concours class

Fed by a brace of triple Webers, the engine bay was elegantly beautiful

This Speedster got 2nd

And this 944 3rd. Actually, 944s were surprisingly popular in the higher-quality restos this year

People's Choice though, was this lovely 2.7 Carrera RS Touring

My favourite car of the show though, was this 964 Carrera 3.8 RSR

Only 50 of these RSRs were made to homologate the 3.8 motor and the widebody, and according to the restorer, this is the only RHD one the factory made.

Originally ordered by Porsche Cup stalwart Geoff Morgan, it led a full life as a competitive race car, before being subjected to a 3yr long restoration

It is...insanely clean.

It still gets used for trackdays, but no longer for wheel to wheel racing.

This is an RS touch...an aluminium hood prop instead of gas hood struts. To complete the weight-saving mutitasking, the rod simply pokes into the top of one of the allen bolts on the suspension.

Yes that's right. The factory used wooden heelboards in the RSR and Cup cars.

By far the most popular class was for the G-series impact bumper cars

With many outstandingly clean examples

Widowmaker!

An interesting sight

Looked to me (I didn't get any details) like a scratchbuilt 962 replica...albeit with a stubbier tail and wing

Twin turbo flat six (not sure what kind)

This signal orange example got 2nd in the modified/racecar class

Looks like a Carrera 3.2 backdate

With a 964 3.6 motor

1st in the same class was probably the most eye catching car of the day, a 911ST rep

In fact there were plenty of tasteful longhood backdates all over

This won the 930 class

This 993 was entered in Open Concours

With an equally concours-standard set of tools, books and jack!

Even the four door Porsches had a class, but no Panameras showed up tho.

Copious eye candy everywhere you look

As for my car, well I didn't win any trophies, although I did win a $150 voucher for car detailing in the raffle (which perhaps is rather ironic!). The scores will be up on the club website in the next couple of weeks, so we'll be able to see how close (or otherwise) I might have been

Awesome coverage, great photos.

I hate to sound like a hater, but I think those 993 RS Speedlines just don't work well with the 964 bodystyle.

Also, interesting to see the 3.8RSR was running a serpentine style belt setup. Did you get any more info/pics of that? Was the harmonic balancer deleted?

Yes, thanks for sharing. Many fantastic Porsches on display.

Congrats to my friend David W for the People's Choice award for his freshly restored Light Yellow RS. I'm sure he is thrilled with this award.

Was great to meet you yesterday babs. Next year I will join you to bolster the 964 class.
The 964 RSR was the stand out car for me.

Great having a chat yesterday, mate

Yes. I thought the RSR was cleaner than the orange 911T that won the class, but I guess maybe being stock counts for more in these events?
