Also, I tend to try and keep the fuel tank at least half full on the C2, any less and the nose does start to get a bit light... doesn't feel quite so good then

they are the JIC Cross coilovers.

no other suspension changes apart from possibly some upgraded sway bars by the previous owner.

+1

as someone said above .. more grip for acceleration but slightly more weight .. i dont have any conclusive data at hand, but I think
- on a tight track or wet track the c4 would be faster, and
- on a dry fast track, the c2 would be faster.

fortunately the C4 doesnt feel like a 20yr old system ... it felt similar to WRX but with a rear wheel drive bias (whereas the WRX had a front wheel drive bias).

With my limited experience I prefer a C4.
me too
My fathers owns a C2. I´ve a C4. Both are lowered (mine with coils and sways, my fathers only with springs).

I prefer my car. My dad too .

It is much more comfortable to drive fast with it and it feels rock solid...

With my dads car, i was sometimes "surprised" by oversteer driving in the alps...

I own both and prefer the C2. Its lighter and is less docile. It depends on your preferences. I suggest you drive both and make your selection. As for reliability, I've had my C4 cab for 20 years and 200+ miles. The C4 system is very reliable.

Excellent responses everyone! Thank you for taking the time to offer you experiences. I will try and drive both but there are not many available locally. This is why I thought I would get opinions is to possibly expand my search options.
From what I read both bring something to the party. I was wrongly thinking the performance was diminished with the C4. Your responses have corrected my view!

The C4 is slower, weight and transmission losses being the culprit. The figures shown in A. Streathers book show 30-70 is 4.6 v 5.1sec, all 20mph increments in 4th are at least 0.5sec slower and in 5th at least 0.8sec slower. A C4 performs like a C2 with an large passenger and his luggage on board.

I two weighed both my options and drove them, in the end i ended up with the c2 .i felt that it had the 911 feel i wanted to tame and it just seamed to be more point and shoot sort of steering not so heavy front end. I felt the take off grip is super good being a rear engine rear wheel drive so i was not worried about that and, i dont really drive it in the weather so that was not a concern. I also bought the car for fun track days and spirited weekend drives. Even with the bullet proof awd system i did not want to worried about the extra systems so that also helped me steer away from the awd. Both cars were great in there own right but the c2 was a better choice for me.

I think either is a good choice; for me, I *wanted* AWD. Had a first gen Talon, then first gen Audis (4000CSQ x2), then Subarus (x...3?). First generation Porsche AWD? Hell yes.

I predict they will escalate in value more over the long term.

It rains here in the Pac NW. As a daily/useable car, I like my C4. Especially when powering past other AWD cars on lousy days. The look of disbelief from others is worth it.

You're comparing cars from 1990 to cars from 2012? I would expect 20 + years of development to bring big improvements in lap times and so on. That is not why we like and buy these cars

I searched out an AWD car only, having considered both C2 and C4. The main reason being that I live in a temperate climate (or intemperate...it is England) and have always intended to use it year round, no matter the weather. No point in limiting my fun to 3 months of summer. If I lived somewhere hot and dry, I would have gone with C2 as the obvious choice. In the UK, C4 is the way to go.

Someone on another forum said a similar thing, based on a younger generation of drivers coming through who are used to AWD sports cars. They also suggested that Tiptronic was a future must for the same reason; how many new performance cars have semi-auto boxes now? Not sure I am convinced on either of those, though it would be nice for us C4 owners. RWD is the 'bar-room' hero and like the stock markets, hearsay and legend are more important than reality. I think C2s will always be better valued.

It is very interesting to read everyone's responses. I live in the great white north called Minnesota so having AWD would expand the driving season for sure. Most who own Porsches do not consider driving them in the snow as salt is applied to our roads. It is a difficult decision given the fast approaching collector status of the 964s? I have AWD on my Passat 3.6 Wagon and I do like it!!
