Hmmm. Thanks for the heads up Jason.

The 993 guys are the ones to ask then I guess. Here are their solutions.

Great thread. I need to jump in there. Any help is appreciated.

I have 1985 Porsche 911 coupe. The front window needs to be replaced. I don't want to put in the gasket that has the metal trim piece. I'm trying to find the right fitment that looks like 964 window and gasket (no metal trim piece in the window gasket)

Will 964 or 993 gasket and window fit 1985 911?

The late MY 3.2's used a similar windshield with the antenna built in. Not sure what year they switched to the design I am assuming it is 87-89. This windshield is 1/4" smaller all around than the 964 and is made by Sekurit.

The 964 windshield is OE Sigla and has a larger black area at the bottom. Check the part numbers to know for sure but I am thinking you might have the 3.2 version.

The advantage of the early style metal frame design was in cases like this you could use a piece of wood and a mallet and tap on the frame center outward to push it out and fill the gaps. The 964 seal looks cleaner but needs to be set properly and many times people don't get the inner flap of rubber all the way around and the windshield sits high. It needs to be pulled in tight to work. This is usually from not cleaning the glue off the metal properly prior to installation. As a result this doesn't allow the seal to fit flush however you can go around and push along the inside to try to get it to push outwards and close the gaps. The 993 is glued directly to the car like the 968's and new cars and then has a rubber seal placed around it. this windshield is larger than the 964. These are usually a one shot deal and impossible to remove later without breaking.

I would double check to see you have the correct windshield first.

I just came across this again (explanation behind the TSB that described the 964 windshield frame change) after once seeing it and not remembering where...

I know this is high on my list for the next year...can you still obtain Sekurit glass?

...my 1985 also had the integrated antenna. I believe that may have been the first year. It was total garbage for reception, but very good at letting water in the passenger corner. My 964 doesn't show any signs of rust...but hey, you never know until you get in there. When I replaced my last glass it took two factory seals to get it to seat properly...it was a hassle, a mess and I was never satisfied with it. I'm worried about this one.
