Default Suspension decision made (almost)..

As the C4 will be for the most part used on road, trip to Europe etc
I've decided on Bilstein HD with H&R springs (green), anyone use this combo? I will replace the top mounts but still thinking about polly bush or standard bushes for the rest any thoughts welcome..

I have Bilstein HD with H&R greens on my C4. I installed them 12 years ago. Its a great combination for the street. I replaced the top mounts but kept the standard bushes.

+1 Bilstein, but I don't think they are green any longer. I replaced the upper mounts too, and left the rest alone.

I don't think Polly bushings are worth what you have to suffer through on the street.

I will put a call in tomorrow to check on the greens availability or new equivalent. Think I might stay with original bushes but hope to hitch a ride in one which used polly at the weekend so will know more next week.

I am looking to put HDs and H&R Reds on, just got a quote for fitting (inc. brake bleading and changing of brake lines) for £275 +VAT (not including alignment which I will have done elsewhere) Does this seem reasonable or should I try and tackle it myself?

That price seems extremely reasonable. I paid much more just for fitting.

Thats what I thought, I was quoted close to £500 else where. To get it done properly by people who know what they are doing it might be worth the additional cost. Will just have to work harder for a few weeks !

Just a heads up to both Digger and P964miller. With Bilstein HD's and H&R springs you are not going to lower the ride height more than 1.5" in the front. This will put you at RS ride height, but not any lower, certainly not as low as your Martini racing avatar P964miller.

Thanks for the advice. I was at Donnington Park today and the difference between stock 140k mile old suspension and even the HD+Greens setup was marked. I cannot wait to get hold of mine and get them on the car!

Great advice from 993james993! I just did the H&R purples with Bilstein HD's. Great ride, however, I wish I could get approx. one more inch lower up front...I think visually it would look nicer to my eye! My car is a '94 C2 not a C4. But, I am happy enough with the new setup! Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up James, RS ride height sounds good to me but if anyone could post a pic of theirs set to RS height it would be appreciated. My suspension is now old and tired to say the least so the sooner I sort it the better.

Prior to updating my suspension earlier this year I made the erroneous assumption that a particular Carrera RS shown in the 964 forum was set at RS ride height. I bought HD's and H&R reds and instructed the shop to put the car at RS height. I later realized that RS height was higher than I thought.

I started a thread for members to post photos along with ride height measurements. You can view (and please post your car's photos and data) here:

Thanks for the link James, the height shown on Makmov's car would be fine for me as I'm thinking of a similar set up. I will post some results when it's done

Digger,

I replaced most of the suspension on mine last winter and fitted poly bushes all round to the trailing arms and arbs also fitted Bilstein HD and springs from design tek. Its hard to be objective as your replacing 20 year old bits and things are only going to be an improvement however feels like a new car and drives tight as a drum and absolutely no issues with the firmness of the ride as ever the budget soon adds up if you go the full monty bushes, shocks, springs etc but I would reccomend doing the bushes as well.
