Default a pin from the gearbox...

While in the process of a transmission oil change, this is what I found stuck to the draining-plug magnet.
Looks like something from a bearing...
It is 13,8 mm long and 5 mm diameter.

Is it as bad as I think?

TIA
Anto

De javu ... That pin has been seen here before! Same circumstances.

I think it was put down to an oil pump housing alignment pin.

Different pin. Similar circumstances.

Might be a detent or arresting bush in the tensioning plate; part of the shift control mechanism.

I would not drive the car until its repaired.

I would't call 'em "similar circumstances". One came from the engine; mine came from the gearbox.

Thanks a lot Steve, but that's exactly the answer I was hoping not to receive...

It's likely part # 900 302 028 01 or # 900 109 106 00 or # 928 303 223 25. All three are shown on page 142, illustration 304-05 in the PET.

You can download the PET (E_964_Katalog.pdf) here: http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessorie...artscatalogue/

Is the car new to you? Have you changed the transmission oil previously? Any recent event that could have caused it to dislodge? Do you race the car?

Steve's advice is the most prudent course of action.

Having said that, the pin may have been there for years. If the car drives fine and you are not regularly pushing it to the limits you may want to leave it alone.

Check out this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...any-ideas.html

Good luck. I can imagine how you must feel about this.

You were right the first time .

You were driving along with this pin in the bottom of the trans case ?
Everything was OK ?
No problems ?
Shifting was OK ?
No gear grinding ?
No bearing howl ?

Nothing has changed except for the lube ?

James,

I' ve been reading the PET for hours, but couldn't find a pin that's the same size as the one I fished from my gearbox... Maybe a bearing roller?

I bought the car 4 years ago and took it to the local P shop for a "full" service... I imagine (at this point I hope...) they didn't change the transmission oil.
Since I own it, the car has always driven well. Never a problem/noice from the gearbox.
It's a C2 with LSD, 160.000 km never rebuilt. I like to drive it fast, some track days, but never a race.

Thanks for your help

Indycam,

Not a problem since I bought the car (4 years ago) and first time DIY transmission oil change. From the amount of metal powder I found attached to the magnet, I suspetc it's been a "long" time since that draining plug was opened....

Ciao

If it was ok before you opened up the drain plug ...
I doubt that pin is anything important .
But just to make sure , send me one round trip ticket to Abuzzo ,
I'll drive your car all around Italy until I am 100% sure .

You'll be ALWAYS welcome, if you ever decide to visit this wonderful land
Yes, we've got many odd things, maybe the worst politics in the all world, but, believe me, Abruzzo is a truely special place to live!

Hey there Guys,

Well it took us a little bit of head scratching to figure this one out too, but after checking a bit, this part is the 5th/Reverse Shift Rail Lock out pin. Part number 950.303.143.00 This can sometimes fall out during assy if one is not careful to ensure that it stays in place.

This should be taken care of as without this piece in place, there is a possibility of shifting into two gears at the same time, which will basically blow up a gearbox, not a pretty picture.

Glad we could help, here is a picture to show you where this part should go.
