Can't get scantool to work.
Hi Guys, I just bought a Scantool to try to fix the idle, but as usual the instructions are too confusing and I can't get my laptop to connect. It keeps saying cannot connect to com1. I have windows 7.
Any help?

I loaded the drivers on my ancient laptop with XP and I finally got the scantool exe to work but still won't connect. The scantool.ini file is a mystery to me. WTH does a notepad file have to do with this? Why can't this be easy? What a nightmare

I had the same problem and the comp tech I had look at it changed the com port and then it worked....dont ask me how he did it or where.....if I knew what he did I would open a computer place and fix them myself....hope maybe somehow some way you understand this and it helps you.
and right after he fixed it I found a great deal on a hammer....so now it sits in its nice little case....collecting dust...

What is your connection to the laptop? Are you using a 9-pin to USB adaptor? If so, the adaptor must be capable of operating at 8800 baud.
Did I confuse you even more?

I've given up, this thing is a waste of time and money. I'm sending it back. The instructions are not helping me and the guys that sold it to me have no troubleshooting help.

Try this
http://928-ecu-repair.com/start_eng.html
Cheaper than the Bosch Hammer (what isnt) and it does not need batteries (which is a real problem with the Hammer) , I bought one from a Rennlister and am quite pleased with it

Huh. I hadn't heard that batteries were a problem the hammer.
I've had mine for years and rarely ever charge it and it works just fine when ever I use it.
It's kind of like Linux - I guess it should be rebooted (charged) once in a while; right? !

All rechargeable batteries have a finite life , once those in the hammer go they are pretty hard to replace, I passed on one because it would not take a charge anymore and I could not source the batteries for it

I got a durmetric after an exhaustive search for a reasonable hammer. I kind of wish I would have seen or found that Hammer knock off sooner. Nevertheless, the only thing the Durmetric doesn't do is the idle adaptation. It does bleed my C4 locks, does a complete scan of all the vehicle modules and I have had no trouble using it, connections to a lap top with Win 7 or any other issues. I guess I can't complain too much.

Scantool needs to have the correct com port information in the scantool.ini file, and this file needs to be placed in the Windows folder. (most often C:\Windows)
The application does not cope with com port numbers above 9, and you have to make sure that your USB serial adapter or RS232 port have a number within this range. (check Control Panel/Device manager)
I have lots of installation information in my Scantool downloadable file here.
Cheers,
Tore
