Default Help identifying clunking noise as car slows down

I am getting more seat time in the 964 having just sold my former daily driver. In the past couple of days I have noticed an odd clunking sound as the car slows down while still in gear.

I noticed this several times when slowing as I approach a red light. I am still in gear and not downshifting or otherwise engaging the clutch. It sounds like a couple of clunks and does not repeat. Could this be something to do with the original stock fly wheel? I'd very much appreciate any help identifying this.

Thanks!

It could be your flywheel. When mine went, it may a nasty clunk if you rolled the throttle on and off. Can you cause the clunk by accelerating and slowing while in gear? How are your motor mounts?

with the foot off the clutch, when you shut down the car, any rattle?
Repeat with the foot on the clutch... rattle gone?

dual mass flywheel or loose stub axles. Make sure the bolts for your rear axles are torqued to spec. For the DMF on my old '95 993, I used to hear/feel the clunking when I would let off the gas while at lower speeds.

Thanks! I'm going to test as recommended and report back here. I failed to mention earlier that the sound seems to come from the passenger side.

The motor mounts are newish OEM RS mounts.

I have an oem dual mass flywheel I just pulled out of my 1991 C4 that was replaced really only because I had the engine out anyway. 70k miles on it and should be "ok" for it's age and mileage. I have no way to determine what is good but it worked fine when i changed it...anyway - if you end up needing a quick cheep replacment, I'll send it faster than the speaker grills....lol....

When my 993's DMF was clunking, it also seemed to be coming from the passenger side. Still, it might not be that. Good luck on chasing this down!

Thanks everyone. Today I had no luck duplicating this sound. I tried coasting, etc. and could not hear it. Also shut the car down with the clutch out. No rattling. I'll keep trying to figure this out.

Is a bad CV joint out of the question?
See, if it were more like clicking, I would have introduced the topic with more confidence.
Just not heard of a clunking CV, though... and am just ponder-posting.

The car is going to get new suspension soon. I'm hoping to have an idea on this so I can have the mechanic troubleshoot the noise. Nothing is out of bounds. I'll post whether or not I can isolate this and what the final verdict is.

Hi Shamus, I don't think so. In this car the spoiler stays up until I come to a stop.

Today I put the car in neutral and let it coast to a stop. No noise at all. Once in neutral the tach dropped to 900 or so.

Then I tried coasting to a stop in gear and the noise happened right around 1000 RPM which is just above idle. I'm wondering if it might be the transmission mount? The motor mounts are only a couple of years old but I did not change the transmission mount.
