I think its more about getting the right torque on all the bolts vs whether you are oiling the gasket or not. I bought a lower range torque wrench just for this job.

X2. Install them dry and torque from the outside-in. Applying oil to a filter gasket only allows for easy hand removal. Doesn't do anything for sealing.
call me crazy but I always used a thin film of grease (axle grease or similar) on my VWs valve cover gaskets to keep them a) from leaking and b) easily removeable (and reuseable) without tedious cleaning. I do this now on my C4. Still leak free and easily removeable--I haven't tried reusing though...
That's actually on that page of PET for the plug (#4) on the end of the spray bar (#3) and the plug (#18) on the front of the camshaft housing.
Thanks, Jason. I don't think I did any harm by adding a little of it to my seals. I do my valves once a year and inspect for leaks often so I will be on the lookout for any difference.
