Default h4 question

guys new to the 964 couple questions

Does the 964 suffer from the same relay issues/ headlight switch issues as the early cars 65-89?

And do H4's fit into the 964 buckets I can assume yes but want to know before I start searching.

is there a major improvement in lighting from h5 to h4 or hard to tell the difference?

Have a set of H4's ordered from Pelican myself, but have not arrived yet.
A fellow member here in Colorado made the switch and said the difference was tremendous!

I'm sure others who have made the switch will respond with positive things to say about them...

To get good light you will have to do the relays. I put in the H4's and was very disappointed, hardly any improvement. After I installed the relays and heavy gauge wire I can see into the next province when driving at night with the high beams on. I am using the standard 55-60 bulbs.

Yes relays are a really good idea, with good stout connections directly from the battery for the main line. They make a huge improvement.

Be advised though that the trim rings aren't the same. You'll want to get the entire kit that includes the rings, and depending on your taste paint them to match your car, or some guys go with a contrast or chrome...

Do the H4's attach to the same mounting points as the original H5's, or are any modifications required? What is different about the trim rings?

The H4's mount without mods. You do have to change the electrical connector from a H5 to a H4 style. The trim rings are different. The H5's hide the aiming screws. The H4's do not.

By the way, I have installed H4's on both of my cars. I have relays and am running higher wattage bulbs (80/100 watt). The improvement is significant and well worth it.

so would h5's be almost as effective with upgraded bulbs and relays? Thats really the question. I put h4's on my turbo and they were a huge improvement over stock.

In my opinion, the light pattern of H5's is not as desirable as H4's. If you need to stick with H5's, then higher wattage bulbs with relays helps but its not the same as H4s.

I dont need to stick with them I just thought if they were similar why mess with the h4's they never fit the light buckets correctly (on earlier cars anyhow) people have to safety wire them in etc and then I have to mess with painted trim rings. I just thought if It was similar in lighting I would just stick with h5's

on a side note what relay kit should I use? same as the earlier cars?

The higher watt bulbs will make a bigger difference than the H4 lenses.

is there an idiot-proof thread explaining how to do the electrical work to install the relays? I have read through a few threads, but still not comfortable with the relay upgrade...

read the daniel stern thing once - good writeup. But did anyone do a good documented step by step with photos here on rennlist yet? That would help make sense of some of the nuance...

Perhaps I can walk you through it, and provide pics... I need a good excuse to create a DIY. If you get the relay basics it helps... and all the Bosch relays are similar in terms of Pin Number etc. What I don't have to give you is actual part numbers, and if there is a DUAL relay that does it for you. I ended up using two relays with some wiring to handle the high and low load

I was going to purchase a kit from Daniel Stern, but for a while he wasn't responding to inquiries, so I made my own.

Are you comfortable with soldering joints and doing basic electrical work with spade connectors?
