I'd be prudently skeptical of this car initially. Ask yourself (and the owner) how/why this car has only 40 something mileage after 20 years, and then left idle for 2 years. If you are left with a good feeling about the explanation(s) given, then proceed. For heaven's sake though, do take ALL of the advice offered on the previous responses from the Rennlisters. Cheers.

I just purchased a 1992 Cab 911 C2 with only 19,500 miles. I had fluids replaced, tires, all belts, battery and I believe that was it. No problem since purchase.

I looked inside the car yesterday. Did I mention the Targa top was trashed? As a result, the inside of the car is soaked - carpet, seats, everything. The inside of the windshield was covered in pea size droplets of condensation. Mold is beginning to grow. I think I am going to pass on this one unless someone has had experience with flooded interiors and tells me it isn't a big deal...

iiiitttsss a big deal.

If it is rusty it's probably not worth anything but parts.

If it is not rusty, the good news is you can get a new interior for it.

It is a big job though, and not cheap, many labor hours involved, and pulling all the glass and replacing anything "SOFT" : carpets, foam, insulation head liner, etc and then a real good look at all the electronics. If you have to start replaceing moduals, motors, switches then it's a TL

If the car starts and runs with no major issues and you can get sub 5k and ready to get your hands dirty it might be a deal.

but if needs an interior and an engine or trans, or has some other issues its a TL.

A 44K car - what a shame. It would be the closest thing to a "flood car". As Makmov said, you would basically have to gut it inside. And if water drained down through the dash - UGH. You could be dealing with gremlins forever.
Even if you are prepared for the job, my bet is the owner will still not want to let it go for what its true value is, as it sits now. So it will continue to sit there, rotting away.
Keep looking. Maybe the other car mentioned in this thread?
I'm continually surprised by the number of little-used cars that seem to pop up from nowhere.

It lends me to believe there was and probably still is something else significantly wrong with the car.

What a waste

In the UK it would be hard to find a replacement targa lid for much under £1,000 GBP, 2nd hand. These are now a fortune from Porsche new (£4000 I think someone said!!!).

There are a few top shops in the US regionally (one here in Seattle, one in the Bay Area and one in Denver that I know of), that will do a decent rebuilding job for $500-600 USD.
I think the acknowledged master of the craft is Dan Pechtel in NJ, he will rebuild it 'better than new', from bead-blasting the frame to a factory-like outer covering, for around $925.

+1. If it was in museum conditions, it could be a great car. Instead it was left in the weather in a rainy/humid climate with water leaking into the interior.

Sad. A four dollar investment in some duct tape would have mitigated this. I can't imagine this not being worth at least 5K though. Granted, the obvious lack of love throws caution flags but if someone planned to lighten up the interior anyway this might make for a cost effective project (well you know what I mean). I doubt the owner will go for a low ball offer though because "it's a porsche".

Chris, I'd move on...seriously. many unknowns, now and in the future when water damaged connections, electrics, etc result in all sorts of gremlins.

If it was a coupe it would have more value as a future stripped down track project.

Also there's a risk that critters have set up shop inside the cooling shroud on top of the engine. That's pretty common on cars outside. Just one more reason to run. sorry.
