16" D-90's vs 17" CUP I's

16" D-90's vs 17" CUP I's
I think that 17" CUP I's look great on our cars. But I also like the look of 16" D-90's.
Is there any advantage to either set up?
Any thoughts on current tire selection for each size?
If I install the recommended steering stops on my early build car will that change the turning radius?
Does anyone run D-90's at RS ride height? If so please post your thoughts and photos if possible.
After a successful search for a nice set of CUP I's I can go either way. At a minimum I will wait until the tires on my D-90's need replacing.

Performance tire selection is going to be better for 17"s than for 16"s.
The updated steering stops to prevent 17"s from rubbing will reduce available steering angle and increase turning radius.
Check the latest reply to the White 964 picture thread for a lowered C4 on D90s.

I will say that the car rides better on 16's.
When I was AX'ing the 911, my track tires were Kumho Victoracers (245/45, square). The ride was better when I bolted the track tires on versus my normal street set-up (17" MM Cup 1's and Bridgestone RE05A PP's).
I am using the D90s for winter tires now, and am very happy with the ride quality. I also run close to RS ride height, but I see that the need for photos has been addressed.

Cup 1's for summer and D90's for winter. I think that the demand for D90's is going to increase over time with people wanting to return their cars to the stock look.

Drifting
you will notice a slight increase in turing radius with the 10mm steering stops, but it's not a big deal unless you are pulling into a tight parking spots all the time.

I thought I was the only D 90 fan
7's are becoming more difficult to find but they are out there. I believe the 7's were OE on the 944 S2-- 55ET

Not RS height, but D 90's and Cup I wheels at 1.3" lower in the front and 1.0" lower in the rear. I plan on new Bilstein's with H&R springs which will be 1.5" lower in front and 1.3 in the rear.

Hi Brian,
I love how your car looks. In the first shot the flag mirrors, ride height, D-90's, black headlight rings and lack of center caps give it an outlaw look that's fantastic. The snow just adds to the overall effect. I also think the car looks great with the Cup I's.
When are you adding the Bilstein's and H&R springs? I have plans to do the same update to my guards red '90.

Hi Brian.
Great picture in the snow!
You need to fit 965 mud flaps, they help tremendously with snow accumulation and keep the sides much cleaner.
I just got home from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Shrek is so dirty it is scary.
To get back to the wheel diameter subject, on a real daily driver, the 16" are hard to beat. Confort, and more performance than reasonable for driving on open roads.

Thanks again for the compliments.
I am hoping to have the suspension redone by the end of next month. I have to 'go around the horn' (an inside joke for driving around or through Chicago from NW Indiana) to get to my mechanic, so I need to co-ordinate our schedules.
I am wondering though if I shouldn't have the 17" wheels and tires on to do the ride height, alignment and corner balancing. Anyone have any thoughts if it makes a significant difference to have the Cup wheels on? Thanks.

I was thinking of you just the other day as I was rallying around the county roads in the snow. I didn't know there are factory mud flaps for our cars. I'm still looking for a factory ski rack like you have and now mud flaps. What's next?
If you look carefully you will see factory mud flaps on my A4 Avant. I agree they do really help keep the crap off the side of the car even though they look a little goofy.
