Hi all,
I've combed through the 964 prices thread so I believe I have my answer but I thought I would post this to get some personal opinions on a car I am looking to buy.
The car is a 1990 Carrera 4 (964) Black on black, manual transmission. Exterior and interior are a solid 8, with 93k miles on it, 3 owners, no accidents, all records.
The car needs a new clutch and a few minor fixes totaling $4000. I am looking to get it transported from North Cali to Boston for $900. The 'list' price is currently set at $18k which would bring the total cost to $23k, delivered.
Comparing it to local C2 & C4 prices (seems there is not much of a premium placed on C4), this seems in line but a little expensive.
The car looks really nice and it's probably the best C4 I have seen that's not a show car selling for high 20s.
Would you pay $23k for that car or pass?
Would you buy a car that you know has to have its clutch replaced as diagnosed by a reputable shop? Or would you rather buy a car where you don't really know what will need fixing in 3 months?

Transport, while it does impact the total cost to get the car to your door, does not factor so much into the fair market price eval for the car.
So you have a full PPI complete already and no other issues?

Knowing that it needs a clutch & other fixes it seems 16K would be a fair offer. I would also suggest a PPI be done to catch any other issues before purchase....ya just never know.
Good Luck...sounds like a nice car.

I agree, that very big $4k cutch repair means more of a discount. My private transaction fair price target for a needs nothing well sorted C2 tiptronic was $20 - $21k. That means it is 8-9 or better inside and out and turn key. Needs nothing. I am currently price negotiating based upon PPI results based upon that turnkey price.

Agreed. Don't take the asking price and add on the cost of work that needs to be done, subract it, unless of course the price includes the work to be done, then add on half of the cost of what the PPI revealed (ie. $16k with no work done, $20k with it all fixed) exclusive of shipping cost.
If it is a list price, then that suggests a dealer. Did they do the PPI or someone else?

Great to have another 964 in Boston!
I agree that the price+repair is on the steep side. But if it's really *perfect* aside from the repairs as found through a very very very thorough PPI, then I wouldn't feel terrible about it. It's easy to blow several $k on surprises in the first year of ownership.
Heck, if you have a way to heat your garage and want to change the clutch yourself to save some labor dough then I'll come help

From a performance standpoint a correctly operating 964 C4 is completely worth $23k. Evaluate 'market price' as a guideline, not as the be-all/end-all. Don't get rooked, but don't regret passing on a car you liked.

Now you don't say what year your car is or what it is.
91 and new coupes demand a preimum. There was quite a difference in MSRP, 91 MODEL year had major updates and improvements.
89-90 car just don't bring as much.
Cabs don't bring as much.
Targas don't bring as much.
The other day I looked and found only 1 91 Coupe $27500 78k

The question is pointless until after a thorough PPI has been done and those issues are exposed. As Ricardo mentioned, transport cost should not figure into the equation as to a "fair" price.

You are in the ballpark. If a thorough PPI reveals NOTHING else but the clutch, then I would say it is a fair asking price.

Seems high. I just purchased a 1992 C2 Cab 2 owner with 19,500 miles for $18,250 from Beverly Hills, Ca. Frt cost me $1,000 shipping to Kansas. Just sold 1993 c2 in perfect condition 47,000 for $23,000.
