Default Can later model rear shocks be used on an early 964

I have a set of Bilstein shocks for a 91-94 964 but my car is a 90...can these be adapted for my early car?

Yes, there are people who have built adapters. IIRC the early car had a taller top mount and the mounting point in the car was deeper, so people have built a spacer to take up the difference from the early to the late style.

The change was sometime between 7-90 and 11-90. There ar claims that it happened in Aug 1990 but sources state Nov 1990.

I have looked at a Nov 1 1990 car that had the early style mount, compaired to my car built Nov 7th 1990 with a late style. However, some was claiming there 7-90 car had the late style. Nevertheless, it was during the 1991 model year the switch was made, and don't know of any 90s that had the late style mount.

Build date is 2/90

Havent found the adapter available commercially so I guess I am gonna have to sell the Bilsteins I have and get the correct ones..

I read in an old post (probably 5+ years?) that Steve W. of Rennsport used to have an adaptor available. Might be worth an email. If you do, please update this thread

Done and here is Steves response (he was very quick!)

I used to make those, but have been discontinued due to lack of demand.

I would be nice for Steve to put his design in the public domain so perhaps an owner can finance the making of one himself.

or perhaps we early car owners could petition a production run? I'd consider buying a set, depending...

Steve also mentioned that with the additional Porsche parts needed it was not cost effective so I guess I have a set of used Bilsteins for sale..

That's interesting. I swear I read that all that's required was a spacer, some longer studs, and I think to drill the body to accept the new bolt pattern, which was changed to prevent misusing parts.

Maybe you have to buy new-style top mounts and those get re-drilled to match the old body; that whole assembly has to be spaced down 20mm. It'd be once and done, and then you could use any newer style suspension that suited you, so the cost could be worth it. I think I'd really like Koni yellows on stock springs at RSA+30.

Can someone tell me which version I have from this pic, I'm a little confused and the car is tucked away so I can't get to it readily. Cause I see the little cap type thing on the top making me think its the older version, but the top of the strut sticks out a lot making me think it is the newer version.

I bought shocks online a few months ago and they are at my brother-in-laws in Wisconsin waiting to be picked up during Christmas. Now I'm not sure I have the right ones.

Wont cost you anything to contact the place you got them from and see if you can return for correct ones.
