Welcome to the 964 world. All sorts of tricks and tips to understand about this quirky machine. All well worth the angst though. I use the hole in the filter method too and it works well. Oh yeah - I had the proverbial Exxon-Valdez the first time I did the oil change (but at least I had the foresight to do it in a friend's garage ).

I am making bonehead mistakes as well, my DIY procedures I am writing up now are written AFTER the bonehead mistakes, partly so you don't have to experience them yourself.
