Track times: Cayman S 2011 vs 964 RSA 1993
In our last Porsche Festival we did - as usual - Time Trials with cars divided according to HP/weight ratio
In my category the number one and two positions were won by 2 964 RSA lapping around 2,30 - 2,31 per lap each
To compare times the winners of the Cayman S class (with 2011 cars) lapped between 2,21-2,25 per lap and the best time of the event was set by a 2010 997 Turbo S in 2,13 (and a new GT3 RS lapped in 2,16)

I'm always interested to see these sort of time comparisons but the thing that always crops up in my mind is how comparable are the drivers?
Here's a question for you: If the fastest driver of the RSA swapped cars with the fastest driver of the Cayman, which one would get closer to (or even better) the times that had been set by each?

I've driven my buddy's totally stock '06 S pretty hard on the street and the car is just confidence inspiring. It has the surefooted-ness of a modern car and can drive around nice and slow, w/ light controls (steering, shifting, pedals) as if it were a Honda Civic. Pretty nice, if that's what you're going for.
He drove my car and nearly shat a brick on how crazy everything about it felt. Everything is so heavy and mechanical feeling compared to his car.
My car is in need of some suspension maintenance, so obviously it currently doesn't handle as well as his, but even when I do get it dialed to where I want it, I doubt it'll be as confidence inspiring as his Cayman. Probably the MR vs RR platform difference.

I can't remember who it was, Fangio probably, where it was said he could beat you in yours with his and then take yours and beat you in his.

What if we rolled back the clock twenty years and took a "new" 964 with its fancy PDAS (if C4), ABS, power steering, Motronic, etc...on the track and compared with a first gen 911S. Would the 964 have been as confidence inspiring relatively as the cayman is to the 964?
It's been two decades since i've driven an old 911 so i wouldn't personally be able to compare the two - i'm just curious what others think or have experienced!

I drove an R, S and Boxter S last summer when the "Porsche Experience" came to a local track.
We only got drive these on a short A/X course but I was very impressed. I was tossing them hard but they never got out of shape and seemed to hook up better than my rsa even though I run R compound tires.
Not sure I would ever own one though.....
What was really impressive was the Turbo Cayenne going through the dog-leg turn 1 at Pacific Raceways at 150mph~with 4 people on board!

Now that I have my PCA Instructor's Cert I've had the opportunity to drive a raft of these newer cars.
They are all tremendously capable and FAST but somehow I feel disconnected in them...even the GT3RS feels heavy to me. Yes, one could certainly run them through the course of standard track mods, but we drive air-cooled older cars and I firmly believe there is a reason for the choice.
Each of us has our own personal reason - each one is just as valid as the other.
My little 964 and I will remain best friends for quite some time and I pat her on the dash every time we reel in another water pumper.

After seeing the times on our local event, I was set on buying an used Cayman S, but..... I can´t convince myself to sell the 964, and I can´t have both..
So the 964 remains, but I won´t track my baby again, I think that after nearly 19 years (1993-2012) and 103000 miles in its time it deserves to have an easier life.
