In 10 years of ownership & 30,000 miles (now at 100,000 miles), I am just putting real money into maintenance.

Generally, I spend $60 per oil change every 3000 miles, and a few bucks for air filters.

I did the following improvements over the years, mainly for DEing:
MAF intake = $600
Fabspeed dual exhaust = $600
4-pot rear calipers = $400
(3) additional sets of wheels = $950 (2 sets included tires!)
Track tires (2) sets = $1600
Alignment & corner balance = $350
Mid-rise lift = $1590
H&R springs & Bilstein shocks = $800
16' open trailer = $1900
Trailer STUFF = $500
rear Whale Tail = $450
full cage = bottle of expensive $$$ Brunello
(2) Sparco race seats = $1000
6-point harnesses = $400
(16) sets of brake pads = $3400 (most were Pagid racing pads)
rotors - Cryo treated, (2) sets fronts & 1 set rears = $800
repair of 4 CV joints & power steering rack = $700

Plus I got new coils, wires, caps, rotors, plugs & belts = $500.......and now a rebuild, down to the connecting rods...so far Parts $750, machining heads $875, and a future custom Steve Wong chip at $650.

There's a lot spent, but take away the monies spent on setting up for DE's, I'm LIKELY under $200 a year!

If you're turning your own wrenches in a competent manner, then nothing crazy, unless you have some time of catastrophic mechanical issue that requires a visit to the shop and major teardown.

If you're at the mercy of a shop for even an oil change, then yea, i'd budget a grip and then some.

I've had my car for 7 months and have DIY what would have amounted to at least a couple grand in maintenance and repairs labor (oil change, gear oil change, CV joints, repaired busted side sill clips/replaced weather strip, replaced motor mounts, replaced front grille, busted heat tube, and maybe more I can't recall right now). It adds up.

I am sure I am about due to get the valves adjusted and am not sure that I will try to do it myself but after about a year and a half I have fixed a few items that were left unattended by the previous owner;
cab top brain,
blown out speakers,
broken window switch...
maybe totaling up to $800
Brought it to a Porsche service shop when I first purchased it (not the same one that I had PPI as they did not have the correct tools to work on my 964) and had oil and filter, brake fluid and I have been blessed to spend about $500 so far on this beautiful machine on maintaining it.
PPI can save you a bundle on the 964 and I recommend it highly!

Total cost for 1.5 year, $1300

I think around 10/12k this year but that's with a low mile 993 engine swop and re trim with Recaro spg seats and bilstein suspension & bushes...... Ouch!!

But when it's done it's done....untill next week.....and yes I'm skint.

And lots of bits and bobs...to be honest I'm past the stage of looking how much now and I'm just doing bits as and when I can,so who gives a **** it makes me happy when I tinker with it in the garage, and it will be exactly what I want when it's done and my kids think its a cool car and love the noise it makes.... Priceless....

I would say ($1000 for service, $500 for tyres, $1000 for planned replacement of odd things) $2.5k a year should cover it and allow some money in the pot when you need to get it fixed or "upgrages". Take the view that what your 996 cost to run including depreciation over 10 years will be enough over similar period. This will let you deal with the big things as they come along.

I have done more but that includes full case split engine rebuild, suspension and now doing full paint strip, corrosion repair and repaint. 25k spent over six years and 50,000 miles - its now at 180,000 miles though. $0.5 per mile - doesn't sound so bad that way....

Pictures here but not sure if Rennlist will treat as a link otherwise do a search for "bodywork repairs pictures"

Just for grins - this year since June we've done 4 full oil changes, three sets of brake pads, one set of rear RS rotors, four brake bleeds and three sets of tires (four if one includes the chunked and melted Dunlop Star Specs!).

No way in the world I'd want to add anything else up. Past, present or future, but....

These are durable, wonderful little cars. I highly doubt a 996 of any sort would last as well as the 964...they most assuredly aren't timeless and will never become classics.

I am spending around 12000 U$S dollars in my 964 every year

Registration tax 1200 U$S per year

Insurance : 2200 U$S per year

Parking space; 2400 U$S per year

2011 cost of parts already bought: around 6000 U$S (twice the price of EEUU)

2011 cost of mechanic labour: around 1500 U$S (only item cheaper than EEUU)

No wonder I keep thinking on selling it

I've owned mine for 7.5 years. In the first two years, I spent $2,874 for maintenance and repairs, not including oil changes or fuel. I had to replace parts such as steering rack, CV joint boots, new speakers, stereo, alignment, new tires mounted and balanced, transmission fluid change, brake fluid flush and refill, fan belt sensor, brake pads, and valve adjustment/spark plugs/distributor caps & rotors. I consider almost all of these routine and/or due to age/use.

In the next four years, I spent ~$2,200.

In the past year, I've spent just $1,500, all due to age/routine use. New shocks/springs + alignment ($1400) and an a/c recharge. I did the shocks/springs install myself and have done a lot of repair/maintenance myself. This saves enormous chunks of money.

Over 7.5 years and 21,000 miles, I've spent ~$6,562 = $875/year, which for an old car seems entirely reasonable. Plus, it's still worth pretty much what I paid for it.

Thanks for the input guys. Owning these, or any other car, is not cheap. I was pretty lucky with my 996. I didn't have to spend a lot on repairs over the years it was out of warranty, but I know every car in different. After driving a '90 964 yesterday, it really has me thinking I will try and find a good one. A used 2005-2008 997 in going to be around 45-55K. If I can find a nice 964 for under 20K I could save a lot of money and use it for some repairs/mods as needed. I have been looking around, but if anyone comes across something for sale definitely let me know. I'm looking for a coupe, manual trans, preferably black on black or white on black. Thanks guys.

FYI - I just traded in my 1990 C2 Cab at Autohaus in Lancaster Pa for $25,000

I think I'm a little little lucky this year.

Dealership maintenance cost:
$250 for the ABS light
$600 for PDAS drain, oil change, coil & distributor swap out

And then there's the cool stuff I can do -

Which isn't much.....

i thought we worked out that a 964 depreciation + maintenance + repairs is quite reasonable.

what was the depreciation on your 996?

I bought my '90C4 based largely on the premise that it would be pretty economical to own and operate, actually. I got it off Ebay (sight unseen) for $15.5k and have brought maintenance up to date to the tune of about $2200 since August. The depreciation is done, they're old enough that a lot of the likely repairs have been done already (I know mine got a replacement CCU at one point). So far as actual maintenance, there are not a lot of parts which regularly go bad, so it's mostly the labor associated with things like valve adjustments and the risk of something catastrophically expensive like trans or engine failure. They're pretty tough; I think I'm safe, mechanically.

My last car was to have been appliance-like. I paid ~13k for a very clean '06 Legacy GT (fitted with Subaru's 2.5t). I've been a car guy a long time- this car was clean. The PO had a lift in his garage and let me look at the bottom.

1000 miles after I bought it the turbo bearing siezed and the turbo shaft got hot and broke. That was 50 miles west of Escanaba, btw. I bought a new turbo and associated plumbing and installed it; $1k. 1000 miles after that I spun a rod bearing. The scrapyard engine and associated bits was about $4500 all told, but that doesn't include the $300 I paid to have my (new) turbo center section rebuilt to recover from shrapnel in the oil... Suddenly I had $19k in a car I didn't really even like that much. I drove it for another 8 months and sold it for ~$12k.

I'd have been *way* better off having bought a 964 instead of the Subaru, but I'd talked myself out of it at the time. Even if it blows up, at least I'll have had an awd 911.

A lot. A lot of it is probably not completely necessary, but a lot, and I do my own work.

Just pure maintance not too much, though. I am sure it's been less that $1000 - $1500 in the past year including doing a oil change, air cleaner, fluids, valve adjust, O2 sensor, motor mounts, wiper blades all around, transmission reverse light switch, fixed the CC, replaced headlight bulbs, and a CV boot.

Never a good idea to keep the evidence of what I spend on the P-car around.

A lot of things got done this year and next year's bill will likely not be as much.
