Default Problem engaging gears!

Hi, I have a problem with my 1990 manual C2 and would appreciate some advice. Took it out last night and it seemed to be running hot (gauge was slightly higher than normal - just above half way) with a stronger smell of oil than usual.
Got to my destination, checked engine oil - all OK. On way home I stopped for a while and when I started I couldn't engage reverse or 1st. Managed to get home starting in second ( I reversed out of parking bay by turning off engine and engaging reverse).
Checked it out this morning and the problem is worse - can only engage 4th and 5th, can still get gears when engine off but not so easily as last night. I had a new clutch 18 months ago and its only done about 2k since. Any suggestions anybody? I'll be calling my garage today (GTone) to get their advice, but thought I'd ask you guys first.
Thanks, Steve

Check your engine mounts - i had problems engaging first - was solved when replaced the engine mounts

Was your clutch slave cylinder replaced when the clutch was done?

Thanks. Engine mounts replaced this year with 993 parts. Slave cylinder is original, but system was bled this year as clutch was hanging a wee bit.

Steve
Sorry can't help you on the technical root cause.
But, I always had good experiences with Steve at JAZ in Wembley.
You might find if you give them a call they might be able to advise you on options.

I would check your clutch pedal roll pin. I would be tempted to bleed the clutch slave too.

I had similar a while back - a plate of some sort behind the clutch pedal had come loose (I'm not familiar with what's behind it so sorry for the vagueness). It was a simple, cheap fix.

Fingers crossed for you.

Echoing the others here- check the clutch hydraulics and consider replacing most/all of the system.

I found that my slave needed replacing, replaced the soft line too, and though it made a significant improvement I think I may do the clutch master as well.

Default problem with gears update

After replies, I took the car to my local garage (not specialist) and asked him to replace the clutch slave cylinder and obviously flush out and replace oil. What a difference! Car is a joy to drive now, gear change is easy and smooth, no judder on pull off or run in. Simple but very effective fix, nice one! Thanks to all that responded.
