I've had the chance to use the Scantool (courtesy of Ricardo/Tom - Thanks!) , Durametric Versions 5 & 6, and an actual Hammer on my 91 C4 5-speed.
I was able to get the C4 locks to open with Durametric (mechanic was not able to with his cables/PC), but I didn't bleed. Overall, the Scantool was much more stable and consistent than Durametric. DFinnegan provided the Hammer, we didn't try to bleed the locks, but it connected to all modules no problem. I had several low voltage faults in the alarm. Probably from 20 years of battery disconnects. There is no substitute for a hammer.

Here is what worked, seemed to work and didn't even connect.

Thanks for the info. Is it okay if I post it to obd1interface.com for comparison's sake?

can the after-market options do a correct system adaptation?

from my forum research, the hammer system adaptation makes zero difference in a C2, but it is critical in a C4 .. my C4 has a dodgy idle bump, but a hammer adaptation solves the problem immediately

The Scantool can do Adaptation.

Others
on this forum have used it to sort idle problems that pulling the battery alone would not solve. I saw the option, and it was available to be selected (i.e. not grayed out) but as my car is running fine, I didn't mess with it.

As it is just one user/car, and I didn't follow through with bleeding the locks or ScanTool system adaptation, I'm not sure it's publishable, but feel free to use however you like.

No affiliation with these guys, but I have been looking at their product and it looks good to me:

http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/webshopmanager/index.php

Supposedly it can do the PDAS bleeding.

Manual can be found here: http://928-ecu-repair.com/handheld/i...pdt999_v17.pdf

This is the first time I probably add some value to our community

If I ever make it in their neighborhood I may just give them a call and visit them.

Thank you all for the discussion. I made my decision and ordered the PDT999 from our fellow rennlisters at http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl after an e-mail exchange that answered all my questions - it performs all the functions Laker listed (above) for the 9288 Hammer.

If interested, here was my decision process (in no particular order):
- The only hammers available are refurbished, and may be >10 years old
- A used hammer would not have a warranty, or assurance of long remaining life
- I have no interest in owning a product that requires a computer running the windows operating system
- The PDT999 (as the obd1interface) was developed by a rennlist-er
- The PDT999 documentation shows how to perform all the functions I need to maintain my 964 C4
- The functions I was most interested in performing are: bleeding C4 locks, and system adaptation

After I receive my tester, I will write-up my experiences and post them here.

Again, sincere thanks for all the advice and help to date.

Cheers,
scped

Cool scped, let us know how it goes, especially if you do a differential lock bleed.

I'm interested in how well it works for you too. I've been happy with the Scantool but haven't needed to bleed my C4's AWD locks yet either.

Ahhhhh, I finally added value

Scped: do report back how it works please. I feel like getting one as well for all the reasons listed.

Price?

I would still like a reader tool for an iPhone....if anyone knows of one or wants to make one...even if it doesn't do anything but read...

Scped helped me bleed my C4 locks 2 weekends ago. The tool worked exactly as advertised. The bleeding process was very simple. Open the bleed screw, press a button, the locks cycle in short bursts. You keep going until you are happy with the fluid color. Close the bleed screw and press a button to stop the cycle. Move to the next lock and repeat. Total time was very quick and easy.

Special thanks to Scped for the help and his tool.

Yup, PDT999, handheld hammer replacement rocks. Made bleeding my C4 a breeze, see my thread on that.
