Default It's true - the 964 is a practical car after all!

OK, the Roof Box/Cargo Box finally arrived. Here's a couple of iPhone pics (I'll take some better quality ones this evening!)

I guess it would be OK to fit a larger one, but I think this is big enough for what I need at 320 litres! There is enough space for 4 or 5 reasonably sized bags.

I have a 600 mile trip to do on Saturday with my wife and 1 year old son, so it'll be interesting to see how it works out!!

Looks great, Andy. I had been thinking about a longer, lower profile cargo box, but yours looks pretty nice. I'm looking forward to your driving impressions and change in gas mileage. Enjoy your trip!

Most of the ones I saw that were not crazy expensive we this kind of shape. Even the ones that were longer, we even a bit higher and of course, heavier, but I'm sure you can get ones that are a bit more fuel friendly!

That is going to be a wonderful sight for passing motorist on road. I'm sure you'll get lots of thumbs up! With the hum of the flat six right behind, Thomas should be asleep in no time.
Safe travels my friend.

That's about the same size as the Yakima one I had years ago. Only downside is that I went from ~21MPG @ 75MPH to about 18MPG @ 70MPH.

I've been thinking of getting a box too. Here's a shot with the Yakima extensions breale01 mentions in place. I use the basket for hauling track tires.

Well, I've just driven it home and it drives fine - you don't really know it's there (it's empty though at the moment). No real change in wind noise, but I only took it up to 65mph.

Anyway, here are a couple of better photos..

Great pictures from everyone. I feel more comfortable now putting a box on my 964, and with those Yakima extensions as well.

Let us know your driving impressions with the box loaded

Not that I am recommending this box for a 911, but for comparison, here's a Yakima Rocketbox 16 on my 330i. Looks crazy-big, but actually was very stable. It's long, but narrower than the Thule boxes in this thread. We were carrying a bunch of large, but light weight baby stuff on a week-long trip to see my in-laws and it worked well. Plus the BMW has built in mounts for the towers, no worries about using the rain gutters.

Well, I've just got back from a 1600km trip with the 964 and roof box and I'm very pleased with it. There is not much difference in noise or in the way the car handles. When it's fully loaded I did notice a bit of a difference in the way the car accelerated and how hard you needed to brake, but nothing major. (Since I had my son in the car I didn't want to push the car anyway).

For fuel economy it did make a difference, but again, nothing drastic. I didn't measure the mpg, but I would guess 5-10% difference, although I still managed to get about 600km from full to just below a quarter on the guage!! (Motorway driving)

I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a way to make their 964/993/911 more practical!

Thanks for the trip update, Andy. I think a cargo box for the 964 is in my future plans.

A thank you from me as well Andy.

I've not noticed any damage to mine. The clamps/feet on mine are rubber coated to protect the paintwork.
