Default Roof/Cargo Box Suggestions for 964 Coupe?

I need extra storage space for the occasional weekend road trip.

I already own the Yakima 1A Gutter kit and crossbars for use with a bike mount.

Any suggestions or experience for a roof/cargo box that would look & fit appropriately on a 964 coupe? I've tried the Yakima & Thule configurators but real-world 964 owners experience would be appreciated (any photos would be good too). Thanks in advance

Great question, breale. This is on my mind, too.

I had the stubby one on my '92 C4 that I used for awhile. Might be able to find some pictures somewhere. Magdaddy over on the 993 Forum found one (literally) that he's using on his C4S.

I like the Inno boxes. Currently use the 14 cubic foot one. I believe it is a BRA1450. Reason being is we can fit our skis into it (I think it's 70" long). It's not the super stream line one as I'll throw boots and bags in there as well. It's great for carrying everything. They also make a shorter box with the same shape, the proportions on that would be better on a 964 but if we had that only my kids ski gear would fit .

This is something I'm looking at - in fact I ordered a Thule roof box last week - it should be delivered in the next few days so I can post pics of it then. I decided on a fairly small one (320 litres) as weight is an issue and I figured it would be enough to turn the 964 into a family car now that I've fitted a child seat in the back!!

The one thing to remember with a roof box is that you need to ensure it's level. Most roof racks have the same length feet for the front and rear bars, and with a 964 this won't work - you need longer ones at the back as otherwise the roof box will be an even bigger air brake than it already would be!!

Here's a couple of photos of the car with just the roof rack fitted...

What about a trailer?!

Great tip, Andy. Are the longer feet available from Thule? Which Thule roof box did you order?

The box I've ordered is an Ocean 80. It's 10kg which is one of the lighter ones I could find and shouldn't have too much of an overhang of the roof. I don't plan on putting heavy stuff into it though - I'll keep those in the car.

For the feet, you need to have 2 x 951's and 2 x 952's. They're only sold in sets of 4 though, so the best way to do it is to buy a set of both between 2 people so that you both end up with the correct feet you need. (Or find someone who wants to level out their roof rack and would swap you 2 of the shorter feet for 2 longer ones!)

You'll also need some 527 locking ***** to make sure it doesn't get stolen and of course, the bars themselves.

Thanks Andy! When you get the box, please show us a pic of it all in place. And how much the gas mileage suffers with it on.

Yeah - not looking forward to that part - driving from Paris to the UK next weekend so that'll be a good test for it... I've heard around 15mpg mentioned before...

Thanks for the great advice. My Yakima 1A Gutter Towers are all the same (standard) height. Hasn't really been an issue when carrying a bike, but the bike is definitely sitting at a positive angle-of-attack. I see how this could become an issue with a box. With Yakima, it looks like instead of being forced to buy 4 tall towers and only using 2, there is a 'Hi Rise' adapter kit. Does 3.5 inches more height in the back sound about right?

As for the box, looks like it's a choice between something that could carry skiis (which would be good), or a simple short square type. If there exists a ski capable one that looks good on the car, I think that would be suitable. Mind you, my skiis (cross country) are 210cm / 82 inches long....

Please do post some pictures as soon as you can!

I'm not able to locate this model (Ocean 80). The 10 kg weight does make it interesting. Seems similar to the 'Sidekick' available here (?)

Here's a link to it on the website in the UK http://www.thuleonline.co.uk/product...Thule-Ocean-80
It's similar to the Sidekick, but it opens from the back rather than the sides.

Over here Thule offers the Excursion, which opens from the rear, but at 38 lbs = more than 17 kg, seems heavy so likely not equivalent to the Ocean 80.

Learning as I go and getting closer to a choice!
