Default Thinking out loud, opinions appreciated...

Would you sell a beautiful and well sorted '92 C4 which you've owned and loved for over 3 years and 35K Km to get a 996 GT3. The car is exclusively used for fun twisty mountain roads/track driving and by no means a DD. Why or why not?

Thanks!

I haven't driven a 996 but styling wise, they do nothing for me. I prefer the classic look of the 964. I would keep the 964.

You should change the title to '996 GT3 or 964' you'll get more replies...

I don't think a 996 GT3 is that special. It is not as special as a 964 inspite of having better performance.

Now a 997 GT3 RSR maybe.

you got your 964 sorted exactly the way you wanted. You know every sound, every nuance and can determine the temperature and humidity outside, just by listening to the way it fires up when cold. Why would you want to start all over again?

I had a 04 GT3 3 years ago and LOVED it! I sold it 3 months later. Had I not, it was jail time for sure. I had to drive it at insane levels to get the performance it surely delivers. The 964 is a much more refined "every day" car, and can be sharpened with some effort. The work I've done on mine (964) has made me appreciate it so much more. I have often thought of selling it for another GT3, but talk myself down when I recall past ownership. I agree that the styling cues of the 964 are vintage, but include more modern componentry.

The decision is purely your's, and it's a a close call in my opinion. I am currently in the 964 camp

Only you know the answer to this really. Asking on this board is almost not worth asking. 100% will say 996 hell no!, keep 964.

Ask on the 996 board and the result will almost certainly be the exact opposite.

You say that its mainly a pleasure/spirited driving/track car. To me, that makes the 996GT3 a no brainer over the vast majority of sports cars, not just other Porsches, but again, this is all extremely subjective.

I can understand the allure of a 996GT3. Those cars are fast as hell! In the same hands, much faster than a 964. Actually, I want one too (although I want a 997GT3 even more). But I would never give up the 964 - the last of the handmade air-cooled 911's.

Out of curiosity, what are 996GT3's going for these days?

You can find very nice exmples of the 04, 05 variant for $50-55k depending on the mods. Probably won't go down much more in value. Keep em both if possible, decide, then sell the odd car out. You'de be losing interest at less than 1% per annum on $25K (value of 964) for 3-6 months. The cost for the comparison/decision, maybe $125 plus insurance and garage space. Either car will sell quickly when you finally make the choice....

Don't do it bud! Spend the extra cash on making the 964 exactly how you want it to be and it'll be instead!

Tax and license would add up... at least in WA state. If only money weren't an issue...

That's a tough call, I would never get rid of the 964 they're my personal favorite 911's. But I do like the GT3's both from the look and performance. Performance wise you can't argue it's 15 years difference in technology, probably much easier to go much faster in the GT3. But the look, smell and sound the 964 is awesome. I would say have 1 of each if money is no object
