It's part of the central locking that supplies power to the locks.

+1 on that being the easiest test. I had to replace mine because the door locks stopped working.

The melted casing is more likely to have been caused by a split heater hose in the footwell (they're made of paper), rather than the locking unit overheating.

No it's not. Spoiler control module is 911 618 112 00 or 964 618 212 00 on later cars and is either located under the seat or in the footwell.

Kuchar, you can persist all you like but you will still be wrong

Here's the identical looking part that has the identical part number that I took out of my car....and I can assure you that when I took it out the central door locking stopped working but the spoiler continued to raise and lower like it should.

Kuchar, I thought it was a spoiler control also, but mine is an older car and a little different so I didn't speak up. I knew the enclosures looked similar, but I didn't know the boards also looked so similar. Spoiler control is under the seat and central locking is under dash. Here's the spoiler control board for the '89:

I thought that spoiler brain was under the dash, when I stop I hear a relay in passenger dash zone!

Regards.
