Hello, I would like to ask you all your opinion on the best wheels for a 964.

I have had a '90 C2 Targa with Design 90's on, 6J front, 8J rear. I got these from Ebay because the '92 17" Cup Alloys gave a very hard ride. The ride with the Design 90's was much better for touring and general use.

I now have a '91 C2 Coupe Tip again with '92 17" Cup Alloys, and I do not like the hard ride at all, so I want to fit some 16" alloys, like I did the other one.

I have seen 16" Cup Alloys for sale, they tend to be 7J front and 8J rear. I have also seen Boxster 16" alloys for sale, again 7J front and 8J rear. Some are 6J front.

I don't quite understand why the wheels for the front were available in 6J and 7J - I guess some people preferred a wider front wheel? Can anyone comment on the benefits of having a 7J as opposed to a 6J at the front?

Will 16" Boxster alloys (lots availavle it seems) fit my 964?

Does anyone at all like driving with 17" alloys on a 964? I guess they are better on track days, they might look more impressive, but in my experience give a horribly hard ride.......!

Correction - the 16" Cup Alloys I have seen are 7J front 9J rear.

I guess everyone has their own taste when it comes to harsh ride. I'm driving my C2 with 225/40-18 in the front and 265/35-18 in the rear and I think it's quite comfortable and of course very grippy. And the car looks great with them on....

But then my last fun car was a Mk1 Scirocco Turbo with all poly and steel bushings, very firm spring ratio's and so on so compared to that my 964 is a great mix between comfort and sportyness.

I have a targa with 16" cup alloys and very happy with them.Kwv3 suspension
and new contis fitted as well;
Of course wheels are only one part of ride quality- poor tyres and or worn shocks
are major factors too.

My 964 with 18" wheels and 600lb springs is perfect on the street... these are cheap from tirerack .. and very light ..

Tell me more about the OZ Racing wheels. What offsets are you running and what rubber? Did you do anything to the car when moving from 17" to 18"? Do you have pics of your car with these?

Tire model has a ton to do with ride comfort though. I don't know what you've been using or what you're using now? I run "high performance" all-seasons since I take the C4 out in the winter. The cold temps nix any possibility of using a summer tire.

I was just using the Kumho ASX on D90's. Much softer ride compared to the summer tires that I had on previously. This tire was a pretty good attempt at performance and a comfortable ride. I recently switched to 17" cup wheels and Continental DWS tires. Those tires are _very_ cushy and the ride is softer than before, even with the larger diameter wheels. In fact, I think the Conti's are too far in the touring tire direction, the steering isn't nearly as crisp and grip seems much decreased so far (still breaking them in). They're nice and quiet though, owing to the soft sidewalls.

I would suggest checking into tire models. The tirerack reviews are very good for this. If you want to stick with a performance summer tire, then the 16" wheels will give you a softer ride quality but there are more comfort-oriented tires for 17" too.

If you're set on 16" there are quite a few to choose from for the 964. The D90's and the forged 928 style flat dishes were both available for the 964 originally. Then there are the Clubsport, which will need spacers in the front (offset is 65, too much). the 16" cups do look nice as well. Boxster also had something in 16" that would fit.

Aftermarket wheels are galore in 16", though most are no longer produced, in favor of larger diameters.
Should you want BBS RSs I have a set in 7.5 and 9" that I can sell.

I would definitely choose 10ET40 again for the rear but I would ...
- consider a 275 tyre
- buy the guard rolling tool from tirerack and roll the fender & flare the guard myself so I could get the clearance within 1mm
- research the tweaked spring plate that guys seem to use to go further than -2 deg neg camber on the rear
(PS - with the right tyre, you could probably go 10ET40 without lip rolling or fender flaring)

Yes those are the type I am after - like EarlyDays' 16" 92 Cup Alloys. So the 7" at the front gives more grip - I guess you are running 9" at the rear?

Thanks Nick for the offer of the D90's, not that practical though as I'm in Europe, and to GeorgeK for the BBS's, but I think I'm after 16" Cup '92's.

The 17" Cup 92's currently on my car are running on Continental Sport Contact N1's I think they are called, they've done 13k miles and are near the legal limit now. Fine on a smooth motorway, but nothing else. The shockers I guess are original, but they're not leaking so what's the point in changing those?

I'm convinced I need a 16" wheel with a decent width of tyre wall. The D90's on the Targa run on Toyo Proxes - very good all round.

Has anyone ever run Boxster alloys 6" front and 7" rear for normal road driving?

Your wheels look nice NinetyOneC2, 14L/100km is 20 mpg in the UK - running at 20mpg over this way is becoming very expensive! 1.50 Euros / Litre 95 Unleaded and upto 1.72 Euros / Litre 98 Unleaded.
