Default convertible top question

So this morning I hit the button to open the top and it went far enough to unlock, then stopped. I tried to close it and it wouldn't lock back up. Repeatedly hitting the button, it would only go back and forth an inch for a few tries, then started to open but would stop every foot or so and I'd have to release and then hit the button over and over until it finally opened all the way. To close it, the same thing - would go for a foot then stop, go then stop, until it finally locked down. Has this happened to you? Bad switch is my intuition, or hope. The motors sounded normal but the switch felt "crunchy". any ideas? Thanks.

when holding the switch down (or up I should say), you get any more action out of the motors when rocking your finger from side to side or around in a circle? if so, bad switch for sure

Check the switch and pray that it is the culprit ( I will pray with you) The switch is the easiest of the fixes for the problem you are having. Keep us in the loop of your progress as there have been many posts about convertible top fixes. I have done most of them and currently my top operates correctly now...

Good luck!

make sure if the top starts to bind at all you let go of the switch!!! It's a more expensive fix than just a switch

Mine did this when I tried to close the top. If I zipped the window up before I locked the top it would not work. If I left the window unzipped it would work fine. I don't know if it was just to much tension?? This happened at least 3 times and each time I unzipped the window it would magically allow it to lock. Let me know if you figure out what is wrong with yours.

mine has been the stop and go for awhile now. It is going to be down probably for the next 6 months or so unless I am caught in the rain so it will be a next winter fix. I will check the relay and reseat it.

In relay box. Relay box is in the trunk - passenger side, above the fuel tank.

I hope for you that it is just the relay, that would be a pretty easy fix also. After checking all the micro switches and looking at the electrical diagram of the system, checking many spots for current, I pulled the cab top brain and resoldered the connections and got it to work for a short while but still had intermittent issues. I ended up buying a new brain and I have not had any problems since. Again, good luck!

I purchased mine used with a guarantee for $250. The one I have now is original for the 993 and takes the place of the previous 964 model; at least that is what I have been told. Has worked perfectly for the past 10 months.

Kuchar, I believe that the cab top brain is around $650 new and I think they are still available. Good luck on your attempt to fix.
