Default Maintenance Poll

Do you do your car's maintenance? Or drop it off at the shop?

Also for those big service history guys, if someone maintains their car themselves should they just write down when they change fluids/ tires/ etc?

I try to keep a record in a notebook of what I do. I also have a box of receipts, but they're a mess... all thrown in... no filing. Just a mass of data.

Otherwise I'd forget what I did after a while. (I'm an "Everything Myself" guy)

Wheel alignment and paint is done by others - everything else is done by me...

I think the fun of owning a car like a 964 is occasionally getting your hands dirty. Mechanically and electrically they are quite simple, so represent an excellent opportunity to develop wrench skills ... shame that getting things wrong can be costly

wheel alignment & paint outsourced everything else in house. Have a never ending list to go through. Just finished valve service, oil change, timing cover cam shaft gaskets seals etc, Starter motor repair clean and put back in to sort grinding noise issue. Use workshop manual on disk as a guide & of course read other peoples attempts on forums..

Small easy stuff myself. Complicated, time consuming, equipment requiring stuff to my beloved, trusted shop . . .

+2 - Everything except paint, alignment, and tire mounting. I've accumulated quite a collection of tools over the years.

+3. I've been wrenching on Porsches, both air and water cooled for a dozen years or so. Oldest I've had was 1960 and newest is 2006. I've done a couple of string alignments that turned out ok. Paint? well, let's just say you wouldn't want me to paint your car. Lol

How nice would it be to have a machine to mount tires at home? And while I'm spending imaginary money, how about a spin balancer?

I write down everything in the back of the maintenance book that way I have dates and mileage kept with dealer records from when the car was new.

I try and do all that I can, it's part of the fun. I don't own a lift, or an alignment machine so I do take the car to the shop on occasion.

I would have predicted Choice #2 would be even higher than it is. That statement covers a lot of territory.

I handle the Porsche same as all my other vehicles: Oil changes, "tune-up" stuff, clean the cleanable engine stuff, brakes if I'm feeling adventurous. Everything else goes to the shop. When I was young, like many others I was proud of doing almost everything on a car myself. Nowadays, standing on concrete for hours and contorting myself in an engine compartment or under a car just plain hurts. I don't know how guys "of a certain age" do it for a living day after day, and still get up in the morning. It's a young man's game. I'd rather sit at a desk, make the money and pay somebody else for the tough stuff. Fortunately where I'm at, we have a slew of really good Porsche indy's within a reasonable distance.

I fully understand Bearclaw, I tinkered with my cars all my life. (my dad was a car mechanic, and my brother still is) I was a systems engineer with Shell.
But after changing the starter motor on my 964 (what a hell of a job) I had muscle pain
for a week... I am of 1940 vintage, so figure
I am fearing valve adjustment now and renewing the 12 sparkplugs of which a few are
hidden by Ferdinand himself !!

I am so helpless with my hands that I use an electric razor to shave just to be sure I don´t kill myself
In addition to not being able to work in the 964 I live in an appartment building sharing the parking area with 200 other owners

I don´t do anything to my car except putting gas and oil in it and driving it...
