Follow up: (mainly as I am always left wondering with those threads that don't seem to have a conclusion)
Pulled and cleaned all the spark plugs. Let it sit "open" for a couple of days (no spark plugs so the cylinders could air out).
Reinstalled spark plugs, reconnected battery. Started up right away. Lots of white smoke from exhaust like an 80's rock concert fog machine. Within a minute of idling exhaust was clear.
Problem i have now is how to ensure the kink stays out of the fuel return line if that was indeed the problem. It seems the rubber hose going into the bottom of the tank is too long. I strongly suspect that the kink has always been there, but can't see any other reason for causing massive flooding of the engine?
