Yes, it is dangerous. You should disconnect that battery as soon as possible

Fire, probably not.
Battery rupturing and spraying corrosive acid everywhere ... yes.

I would replace the battery ASAP and check the alternator as well.

It sounds as though you may have a shorted cell(s) in the battery.

Have the bat. replaced NOW, not ASAP. Have the votage regulator checked ASAP. I'm not very electrical, but you might be able to do a quickie regulator check with a simple voltage tester.

I'm assuming you measured 13 volts while the engine was off and not charging, leading me to believe that it's likely the alternator and in particular the regulator which is at fault and the battery may still be salvagable, provided it is not subjected to further overcharging. Check the battery cells (ie. if it's not a sealed battery) to make sure the water level is good, as some of the liquid may have boiled off due to overcharging.

Just be aware that the Audi battery when you put it in, will be subjected to the same suspected overcharge condition. So I would limit its use to avoid potential damage. Reason I don't suspect a short in the battery is it wouldn't read that hi of a voltage (i.e. 13v) but rather a lower voltage if a cell was shorted, but then again if the short in the cell is intermitten due to vibration, that may explain the voltage reading you're measuring now. Of course this is all speculation on my part and until you have both the battery and the charging system checked out, one can't say for sure what is at fault. The 13.5v charging voltage doesn't sound too far out of line, it could be higher and it tends to contradict my suspicion of over charging. Who knows, maybe once you put the Audi battery in everything will be fine, let us know.

I had a battery do this in my 75 Targa and it was just the battery. Replacememt solved all.

I would disconnect it now. If it's that hot, there has to be a possibility of explosion.

hello guys,

it was the battery cells that were cooked, the actuall battery case was distored, the Audi (100 1994) battery is same spec as the 964 so no probs, it was cold as ice when arrived home, voltage when engine on @ tick over was 14V, I am still wondering what could have cause the Odyssey PC 680 to go that way...I had it since a long time in the car, went for long trips with it ect, I would say the only issue was to test it on regular basis when I was not driving the car for a long time and charge it, i never let it down lower than 9 V,
but one think I left it with a garage to do my brakes conversion and they run it down to 3 to 4 V and try to boost start it, then charge it several times, I wonder if they cooked it by overcharging it, do the boost start could have damage it ? I had this battery since 2006, I don't think it is to long for that type, it suppose to work for 10 years, a least the one I bought at the same time for my bike is still in perfect condition

I like it when there's a happy ending I'd partly attribute your battery's early demise to past abuse. They really don't like to go down much more than a cell voltage.

Thanks for posting an update. I have good luck with those Odyessy batteries on my motorcycle. Even when not taking care of it over the winter. Also had good luck with customer service. I would call / email them. You never know and might just get a replacement.
