Default Any thoughts on this starter?

Once the weather gets reasonable, I'm going to have to tackle R&R of the starter on my '93 Carrera 4 (5 spd).

Saw this on Ebay & says it is equivalent to 996-604-107-00, so should do the trick.

Certainly would be a decent savings over a new Bosch, but I don't have any feel for the reliablity of aftermarket starters...

Are you putting that starter into a 964 or 996???????
If a 964, I would get the right starter for the car, the one on EBay is for a later model i.e. 996.

+1

Steen's sure got it right, there.

Comparison of photos by my Mk 1 (eyeball) comparator shows (below) differing starter shaft length-to-diameter ratios (on the left, the eBay representation, on the right, a real 964 starter as witnessed by fellow 964 Rennlister, Polman) .

AutohausAZ has 'em for about $100 (w/ core return) for a 964 w/ standard transmission, or $75, for the tiptronic version.

Good luck, sir.

one word of advice: these starters are overhauled and painted, so they look nice. But the endplate (with the 2 bolts) must make contact with the starter body and in my case there was paint between the endplate and the body, so it did not start !!! after removing and cleaning with sandpaper it was OK,
but I had to do the job 2 times !! and it is not an easy accessable place to get at the starter .

Hmmm... I had read in many postings here at Rennlist and a few other locations that the 996 starter was a workable replacement/update for a 964. Perhaps that is not the case?

I'd go with the AutohausAZ unit, but really want a starter in hand now without knowing when I'll actually manage to do the job - so I'd be more than likely to lose any core charge.

Anyway - I appreciate all the comments and advice! Happy motoring!

The AutohausAZ Starter is $203 + $100 core charge for a total of $303. Pelican parts lists it as $222 + $75 core charge for a total of $297.

Pelican lists the starter for 964/993 as part # 996-604-103 which is not the same part as listed on the ebay add.

However the Porsche parts manual lists 996-604-107 as the correct part for 993 with manual. On Autoatlanta's website they also list 996-604-107 as the starter for all Manual 964/993 and GT3's

David,

The original 964 part number (964.604.104.00) was superseded by Porsche to 996.604.107.00 which only fits certain 996's (GT3, GT2). The Bosch number I show for your car is SR 0429 X (rebuilt unit).

Good luck with your project!
