This was a great read:
GT Purely Porsche Magazine

February 2010
Proclaiming that one Carrera RS is better than another is a dangerous game, but we like to live on the edge here at GT Purely Porsche. Which is why we sent Richard Meaden off to the North York Moors with a 964 Carrera RS and 993 Carrera RS with the strict instruction to come back and tell us which is the better car.
(((I won't tell the answer....)))

Where are you based Mikaeln? I'm going to guess UK/Europe?
Maybe register for free on the Porsche Club of Great Britain forum where there are dedicated 964RS and 993RS groups - ask the same question there. Lots of very enthusiastic & knowledgeable owners ready to share their views. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/

There are many things to look out for, too many to list in a reply but I'll try to mention some of the more important areas:
1. Originality:
* check engine and gearbox for their specific RS numbers
* check body for correct RS chassis number
* check the wheels, Magnesium and SM should be casted into the rims
* check the bootlid to be alloy (magnet) ....could have been replaced with normal steel version after damage.
* check the interior for the correct RS steering wheel and correct RS recaro leather seats.
All these original RS parts cost a fortune so make sure these are present (e.g. wheels € 4K, alloy lid € 2.5K, seats € 3.5K, steering wheel € 0.8-1K not to mention the price of an orinal engine/gearbox casing)
2. Body condition:
* Many have been tracked, look for accident damage
* Rust is starting to become an issue on all 964's, primarily windscreen and rear screen surround and where the front wings meet the body.
* Since the RS has no underseal be extra careful for rustdamage
* The door stopper mechanism is prone to fail on all 964's, makes for an expensive repair if done right.
3. Mechanics
* Engine leakdown test is always a good idea
* Read ECU for fault codes
* RS plate type LSD can wear within as little as 35K km, in which case new plates are needed to restore its correct function.
* Pay specific attention to condition of suspension bushes.....as well as usual stuff such as brakes, dampers (leaks), steering play.
4. Electrics
* Fortunately the 964 RS has few electric/electronic gadgets, however pay specific attention to the correct operation of the heating system. Fixing a broken CCU, servo's and/or rear blower can easily eat away the better part of € 1K
5. Try to be objective first, then fall in love :-)
Hope this helps,
Harald
