G50 shifter centering spring

The centering spring on my shifter is going bad. Shifting from 2 to 3 is particularly tricky, as the shifter no longer automatically goes to the 3-4 plane.
Can this be fixed from the top? I just had the engine/clutch out of the car this summer and don't want to repeat that if I can avoid it.

Are you sure its not a linkage problem? I had a worn ball cup at the bottom of the shifter. It made the shifting difficult. After changing it, the shift feel was worlds better. You may want to disconnect the linkage from the tranny to isolate the problem, if you haven't already done so.
