Switching from a E39 M5 to A 964. Targetting 350hp. Paging ninemeister and the rest
So I recently drove a 964 and was impressed with the way it steered and handled. It had decent power actually but sort of falls short of my M5 430hp(w/ mods).
I plan to make some cash from the transaction and am thinking of 350hp. How much will this cost? $10k is my limit. I want to put a 4liter kit. I cannot send the engine so I will order the bores, pistons, cams, chip etc.
My M5 does 250hp/ton while at 350hp, the 964 will be at 259hp/ton. Wow cant imagine the acceleration coupled with the handling.
The M5 is a weekend car, so I was thinking of getting the 964. I cant drive fast with my wife in it so whats the use eh? I have two other daily drivers to buy groceries

!!!
BMW and Porsche HP are priced wildly different.
I think the only hope you have of seeing that hp # with that budget # is by talking to TPC (superchargers) or Protomotive (turbos). (which will both still probably top $10k unless you've had a recent top-end rebuild).
350 real N/A HP in a 964 is not $10k.
Where are you?

buy a 930? save yourself some $ & end up with a low compression forced induction engine which can be easily (relatively) goosed in the boost dept vs the high compression naturally aspirated 964 ??........
!!alternatively there is an indy shop in NJ doing very nice installations of twin turbo supra engines (arguably pound for pound 1 of the most powerful & dependable engines around) in 3 series & 5 series bimmers for all in about 10k & fetching 550 hp!!....(e39 was the swap by the by)

I think you will need to budget ~$20k for an honest, reliable 350hp.

other thought -the other option which has been discussed at great length here.....is naturally aspirated C2.....drop all the weight possible ( can get these cars really light for much less $ than building a car to add 100hp at the crank)....& response in the drive maybe more worthwhile

Am based in the Philippines. Yeah I considered a 964 turbo but was way to expensive. Something like $60k. The 964 is about $30k. I noticed FVD has a level 3 993 kit which should fall around $10k. It adds 70 hp to the 993, however, its not available for the 964. I emailed them to inquire about it.
FVD has the MAF kit which should add 50hp. Maybe Ill go with that for the meantime with headers and exhausts. Then try and drop some weight.
How many of you have taken off their sound deadening material and still use it in the street? I used to own a Integra type R and it didnt have any sound deadening.

Like I said above...you aren't going to buy horsepower for a Porsche as cheaply as a BMW. I know, I went from the stock motor in my '89 M3 (2.3l 195hp 4-pot) to a 3.2l 321hp ITB fire-breathing beast of a motor imported from a euro-spec '99 M3, for ~$12k all told (DIY, so no labor costs). Once I'm bored of that power, a $2000 set of Schricks will put me in the 350hp range. There aint nothing like that -that same amount would have gotten me a decent set of wheels for a 964
I've priced out a similar swap for a 964 (993tt engine is the only thing I can really come up with that's semi-comparable) and ~$50k seems realistic. Ouch
As another alternative suggestion, why don't you just drive your 964 for a while? They really are a completely different experience from a BMW, and no amount of horsepower could separate me from my 964 (well, maybe a '92 965 Turbo S!). My M3 makes my 964 feel silly slow, but if I need to turn cars into cash NOW, guess whats going? The two Bimmers. Learn what you want to change about it from experience, not a quick test drive. My bet is you'll concur with the posts above, and start looking into stripping out weight & improving handling even further. I look at BMW's as "power" cars - Porsches (especially the air-cooled variant) are an "experience" car - every single detail on this car makes me smile a little bit inside. It makes me feel like a TV preacher, and I need to reach out to my fellow BMW car buddies and proselytize the cult of 964!

ChaseN - Hey wonderful points you pointed out. Yeah I used to have a euro e36 m3 and it was a blast but no where compared to the m5. You are right about driving the 964 first and enjoy it. I recall test driving the 964 made me realize "I want this car!" I enjoyed driving it despite its age. My brother has 997 gt3 rs, and despite it being much, much faster, the enjoyment of the 964 is un-explainable.
I spoke to Alex of FVD and he said that on parts alone, my budget could be met with a 3.8 liter cylinders, pistons etc. Yeah I was surprised at the maf gain of 50hp. Kinda made think "how did they ever do that?"
Well, I expect an email from him giving a list of parts. The labor, he mentioned would cost over $10k. So the $20k estimate some of you gave is quite in the ballpark.
Lets see how things go.

ChaseN - I just realized you have a little monster with the e30 and the eurospec 3liter engine! Are you serious, that you would sell the bimmer before your 964? Pics pls of both of them!

Why not keep the M5 and get a high mileage but well maintained 964.
Then you don't need to hunt for big hp for the 964 (just reduce weight and add minor mods.) It's the best of both worlds. I can tell you from experience. I have them both

I saw photos of Chase's cars, they look awesome! I was never a big BMW guy but his little bimmer rocks!
About upgrading a 964, If I was going to buy another one (like a coupe for street and DE) then I would definitely try to find one that has already been sorted. Maybe around the 300bhp mark, with suspension, LWF, seats, etc already done.
That way instead of getting a stock 964 for $18k and spending 20k more you buy one for $25 - 30k and spend nothing or maybe $5k extra.
Just my opinion!

Motec, cams, ported heads, pistons + headers = 350hp with 7000rpm limit, Geoffrey's done one of these 9m conversions in the US for Mark and it made 310 at the wheels. It will cost around $15-20k USD or £12-15k UKP depending on which exhaust you decide to buy. Oh, and you need a 964RS lwf kit as well, this will be another £900 or so.
