Default Tiptronic Odometer Problem

Good Morning,

My odometer hasn't worked since I've purchased my car. Speedometer and electronic trip meter work fine. I'm now ready to tackle the job and was looking for some suggestions.

I have a tip so my speedometer is a little different than manual. I have the electronic trip meter and no mechanical trip meter.

I've saw a post on a pelican forum about a 993 tip with similar symptoms which was symptomatic of a relay problem and not a mechanical problem. Does any one know of a relay on a 964 that would cause the odometer not to work similar to the one mentioned in this post:

If not, I'll likely pull my speedometer apart and look for the gear which fails. This looks like a pretty good DIY article:

Any other tips or places to look?

Thanks,
Roger

Its not that much different. It takes a little bit of effort to get the lights lined back up but thats about the only difference. I did mine last year. Sorry about the fuzzy pictures.
You can see the missing tooth on the small gear in the 2nd picture.

Jim,

Thanks for the response. So it's most likely that internal gear and not a relay then?

A bit off topic, but is there anyway to get the tiptronic lights to stay on regardless of having the headlights or driving lights energized.

Thanks,
Roger

It is probably the gear as it is a pretty common problem. I dont know about the rest of the question.

It was indeed the gear. I was never able to work the needle off which was kind of a scary. I also didn't enjoy bending the metal back to get the lens off, but I don't see any other way.

I just placed the order for a new 15 tooth gear. The gear ought to be made out of gold for $25. That is definitely the smallest $25 part I've bought for the car yet.

Thanks,
Roger

If you didn't get the needle off then how did you get to the insides? I recently replaced my odometer gear and had a horrible time trying to get the needle off. I used the 2 spoons method and while it did remove the plastic part of the needle the metal ball stayed on the shaft. I had to silicone the needle back on when finished.

Mike,

I was able to access the motor and slide it out to expose the broken gear with the needle still attached. I just put my new over priced odometer gear in. I'm still amazed by that tiny little gear costing $28. And to think, by fixing it, I'm only going to lessen the value of my car as I drive, although at 215,000 miles, a few more won't hurt.

Default 1996 electronic odometer

Gents,
i removed my odometer for replacing the 15 tooth gear, While removing the round connector back of the odometer accidentally 4 wires of the 12 got separated from the connector, I need help on how to connect these 4 wires back in the connector.

I had the same thought about my speedo. Why mine is still not working. I never plan on selling so I could care less what mileage says. More irked that they want $28 for a tiny piece of plastic. Someone should take one and make a hundred more with their 3D cutter and hand them out.

For maintenance purpose, mileage is good to know.

Try sending the odometer in for repair and you'll likely get a bill for $450. $28 dollars starts to sound good in that context.
