damn! - early money picks always come back to haunt me.

Seriously, I hope you find the culprit spring under the retainer of the first valve, of the first valve cover you crack open - and that the mystery piece is a perfect fit.

I am debating on what to do as the car still pulls very strongly (ran a 3:33 at Miller, full track) and leak down numbers last year were 4-12 (increasing numbers in order of cylinders which would fit with an engine slowly cooling off).

BUT - peering into the cylinders, there is more oil than I'd like to see and alot of oil in the intake (not from overfilling) so, while I am hoping for a valve spring, it is looking like an oil ring is possible.

So, the question is: do I continue with the planned reseal or bite the bullet and just do a rebuild?

The piston to wall gap is measured in the thousands ?
How did a big old chunk of ring get out of the ring grove and into the case ?

I'm in for #4 intake because that's the AASCO "elephant" spring that failed on me in the 3.8 engine. $2K to fix, and (of course) I did all the work myself except for repairing the head.

12% a year ago is not great. I'd do another test now. How many miles on car? Where was the 12% cylinder leaking from?

You may go on for many more trouble free miles.... or this could be a warning. If it was me, I'd do a compression/leakdown test soon, depending on the results probably a top end.

156k km (96k miles)

We thought of re-doing the test now but the engine is already out and disassembled enough that it won't start so can't get it hot enough to do the test.

With the engine out you can easily replace the springs, retainers and valve seals in two days with the right tools as in my pic. No need for a rebuild because of a broken spring alone.

Agree, but the cost for replacing all the springs plus the cost of a re-seal is sneaking up on the cost of a top end overhaul. Considering the mileage is about half way to a complete overhaul, I would go for the top end now and plan to enjoy the car for another 150,000 km.

Yeah, that's maybe true if a workshop is doing the job. I did it myself and paid 800 USD for the parts.

But a top end rebuild is always nice!

Thomas is correct, it is the end of a valve spring.

Don't mess around, replace the entire set of inner & outer springs and fit new retainers whilst you are there.
