Default OH SNAP!!!!

Well, that's what one of the aluminum supports did on my convertible top yesterday. One of the motors stopped working, and the top got torqued. The driver's side major support that connects down to the motor snapped. NOT GOOD!!!!

Any ideas? I'll post up a picture later when I can dig into the top a little bit.

That's sad!

Any chance of having it welded? Is it thick enough?

I might get away with a weld. It's the thick support part of the mechanism.

yeah- mine was not the little hinge piece. It looks like the bar that might go all the way around to create the base of the cab top.

here's my broke-a$$ top.

I think its the B-pillar that snapped.

It's the major part on the back of this diagram- the bottom picture.

Depending on the price for a replacement item, I'd have that welded.

Welded, dressed and powder coated or painted, you'd never know.

Check on Pelican for the price of a new piece.

Geoff - If you can't weld it, maybe try a used parts vendor. I skimmed a few, this one lists some 964 cabs as parts cars. Perhaps they can make you a deal.

At least it didn't completely screw the pooch when it let go. I have see where they will tear the top, and break some of the other supports at the same time. Good luck!

Mine was like that when I bought it. After speaking to a number of companies I found one that would do an exchange for one that had been welded. They are very reputable here in the Uk and they said that they had done quite a few and welding them should be ok

Jeff:

This support can be TIG welded. When this happend to my 94' Cab it was offered as a repair by the shop that made the complete repair. I had already purchased a used support at that point by posting a WTB request on Pelican. I still have the broken right side that can be welded if you need it. PM me if you have any additional questions. I ended up spending about $5k including a new top and overhauling the entire mechanism.

Finding a used one is difficult. I found one after a very long time looking. I agree on trying to get it welded.
