Default Power Steering Leak

Drive home yesterday revealed a loud groan when the steering was on lock. Sounded like the power steering and sure enough the level in the reservoir was below the minimum. Topped it up and then investigated the leak.

Turns out it is quite serious and is coming from the join between the metal pipe and large rubber hose coming from the power steering pump. I have taken a picture to show where the leak is coming from.

Now I assume there is some kind of internal seal as this pipe isn't clamped. Can someone confirm and is there a procedure to follow to fix this? Any idea of the relevant part numbers would be a great help.

Hi Piers, that hose looks very familiar. I had the same issue a few months back. I had to replace the entire hose but its pretty easy to do. the tough part is having to remove the air filter box because the hose attaches behind it. Here is the part number 964-347-447-04. I got it for $123 from porscheoemparts.com.

Good luck!

Cheers

Piers, Had exactly the same problem 4 weeks ago, I took the removed line to a hydraulic hose specialist in Guildford. They made a new one for me, from memory, the cost was £75.00.

Easy job, took me about an hour.

Thanks for the info guys.

Raymond - I presume the £75 was cheaper than the OEM part, or is that not available? I see Pirtek have a place in Crawley which is pretty near me. Do they make up the pipe while you wait, although I guess I could drop it off one day and pick it up another.

In terms of the removal of the pipe it doesn't look too difficult, but I guess it is messy? Did you replace the washers where it attaches to the pump or just use the existing ones?

Thanks Piers

I am in the process of removing the pipe. Airbox off, pipe removed from pump, but the other end of the pipe refuses to budge. Could someone confirm from the photo (link below) that I am trying to undo the right connection?

Hi Piers, that looks like the right place. I remember it being a bit tough as well. I had to use two wrenches in opposing directions. I had to use a bit of force to get it opened. I got a few nicks on my knuckles from the wrenches slipping.

Hello Piers.

That is correct, try and use the correct size spanners if you can.

The new part from Pirtec, is made to order, I waited, about an hour.

Ask nicely, they gave me the washers, also, they created a 'flexible' connection where they braised the steel pipe to the new hose, for adjustment.

Very good service from them, and yes, less than half price compared to OEM.

While you're in there, a good opportunity to ;up-grade the air box!!

Easy job, fiddly, you will loose minimum skin from the nuckles on your left hand.

Go for it!!

Cheers.

Just a quick note to say all repaired. Thanks for the helpful advice. Now I just have to clean off the seeming huge amounts of fluid flooding out of the under tray . . . . .
