Default A few more

I put my dad to work... it is very helpful having someone else around when mating the transmission back to the engine. Unfortunately, the camera is not all that great, but hopefully you can see the approach for using the crane. I used the ATV jack more as a safety net when lifting the engine in (but it really was not needed). My original approach of using thick blocks for the ATV did not work out well.

do you have to take the trans out with the engine? I know it would be nice to clean it up at the same time but geez......

Geoff - I have always taken both the engine and tranny out together. I think its easier than trying to separate the engine from the tranny. Plus, it balances the engine nicely on the ATV jack.

The camera is fine Tom, you and your dad just need to practise not moving when you take a picture!

It's also great to see you involving your dad with your projects. My dad loved coming down to the unit to help us out after he retired and was always making stuff or building things to help us out, in return I looked after his motoring costs to keep him on the road. Unfortunately he passed away 8 years ago and it is only after the event that you can look back & treasure the times we spent together.

I didn't go with the ATV jack because it didn't go as high as the lift table.

With the rear of my car up high on SUV jack stands (from Harbor Freight) I could remove the engine and trans with the lift table without removing the rear bumper.

I hope I can modify this thing to improve the lifting power as it would be perfect. Also, it would be nice if the front casters weren't fixed.

but if I want to inspect the clutch I have to separate the 2 anyhow, right?

Yes but its a lot easier to separate them when its on the floor than when its in the car. There isn't much work space while the engine/tranny are in the car.

I can see it now... while the trans/engine are out I'll want the short shift kit, new engine sound pad, clutch, wires, motor mounts... plus injector refurb, engine tin, fan painted.... and on and on and on.....

you guys are effing expensive!!!

Its only as expensive as you let it be. Just resist the temptations. But don't follow my example, I'm not good at it either.

I just removed it and laid it on the ground when raising/lowering the engine. It would be nice if it would just fold down.

Udo, given that I have a Cab, and I have a G-pipe, the pad really is optional.

I'd like to maybe do a yellow fan, just to add a bit of color to the engine bay. Might have to add paint the valve covers to my checklist too.
