Default 964 coilover help please :)

Folks,

I need to seek the advice of the Rennlist masses!

Im looking for a set of coilovers for my 1990 C4 964 to replace my worn stock suspension with a height adjustable kit. The price of the KW V3 kit is very expensive in the UK and I have been checking eBay.com for other manufacturers.

I have noticed that both the JIC Magic / Cross kit and the Kido Racing kit are much cheaper. Does anyone have any experience of these kits? I know that they wont be as adjustable as the KW3s, but I just want a starter kit (needs to be height adjustable front and rear though!)

Many thanks in advance
Chris

first make sure the rear fits if you have the early design. As far as suspension goes, you get what you pay for. Forgot to mention what you use the car for? street only? go with the cheaper Bilstein and lowering springs.

Are not all of them adjustable via a rotating spring perch ?

Hopefully, you what you fit will last a very long time in which case I would wait a bit longer if necessary and don't compromise on what you really want....

Hi guys,

Cheers for the responses

Just looking for street and maybe light track use. Uprated shocks and lowering springs wont get the drop im looking for unfortunately (I have stock shockers and lowering springs at the mo).

Also, as far as I know its only limited height adjustment via spring perch (a few mm).

I'll wait on some more info from the manufacturers...

The billstein/eibach combo iam running is bob on for normal use.
Mayb better than the more expensive kits on a poor uk road surface?

Having a set that is fully adjustable was very useful for me. The first setup I tried was too harsh - glad I could change it.

I just did a JIC Cross kit, I feel they are VERY stiff, if the UK roads are as bad as I've heard, I doubt that you would want this. Myself, I might change them out next year with something softer, as I like hitting some less than perfect back roads, and they jump around too much. I do like my ride height, which is just over 25" at the rear, less at the front to the fender arch.

I have the KW V3 on my '90 C4 and also had a very stiff setup for the last track season. I was able to dial out all of the understeer with just suspension geometry changes and a thicher rear swaybar.

This year not so much track work, so like BHMav8r I was glad of the adjustability to soften it up. Now it's much more compliant and tracks better on the roads as a daily driver.

I would also wait until you can get the right kit rather than a compromise. As has been said it will be on the car for a long time...

Regards,

Neil

Hey Chris,

Always invest in a better set of suspension, and dont settle for anything less, as Steve mentioned earlier. Even if they are expensive, I'd rather you save up a little longer and get a better set than buy a cheap set of suspension that wont last you.

I dont think you will go wrong with a set of Bilsteins, H&R, Koni or KWs. Im thinking about a set of PSS10 Coilovers for my other 964 at the minute. Already I have a set of KW clubsports on mine at the minute. The KW Clubsports as said on the packet are a bit more harsh for road use, but its definately for track use if not fast road use.

KW V3s is sufficient for mainly fast road and part time track use, depending how serious you are. Always think about your aim or future use of the car! If your planning on improving on fast track days, and then get a bit more serious later, then go for the flagship. This will save you from upgrading later, as kits are not cheap!

Give me a shout, may get you a good price

I have a C4 with KW V3 fitted, it is set to max soft and is great on our crap roads. When I was looking for suspension it worked out only slightly more expensive than the Bilstein/H&R setup but is of an outstanding quality that will outlast the rest.

Hi gang,

Does anyone use or have feedback on the H&R Street Sport coilover kit?

I know H&R springs are well tested and liked, but what about their coilover kit?

Cheers

Does anyone have experience with AST Suspension on the 964?

It seems like all the fast cars at the local autocross events run their coilovers.

I personally use the H&R Coilover and I like them allot. H&R also warranties them for life tot he original purchaser. No complaints at all with their products. Here are some pictures after corner balancing and alignment with the H&R Coilovers, showing the new stance of the 964.
