hood latch cable snapped
Hi all,
I have a buddy who has a 1990 c2 cabriolet 964 who dissconnected the battery before going on vacation and came back and snapped his hood latch cable.
we took a look at it for a while then he had it towed to a shop who said they could help him out. It turns out they didn't know what they were tlaking about
he is now on his 3rd shop
does anyone have any trick or hints on what we could do to get that hood open with no or minimal damage to the car?
thanks so much

if somebody did the later update there might be a extra safety cable behind the plastic wheel well cover on the driver side.

Some of the later model years had an emergency cable installed. If not, I don't think there is an easy way to get the hood open. Are you sure that the cable did not snap inside, near the firewall, where you could grab it with some vice grips?

no nothing to grab on to. (im also sure that the 3 shops hes taken it to would have tried it as well)
i don't belive that the emergency cable is available in this model.
I found this writeup

and
this for reference

I'm personally a VW owner so im surprised that not all the versions have a manual back up

The write-up on removing the drivers side wheel and then the fender liner is what needs to be done. There should be an emergency pull up in that area as the photo shows.

Thanks crash893 for posting, the '90 C2 is mine... the shop did get the driver and passenger side wheel's off and removed the plastic fender liner. Apparantly there is no emergency pull and the standard cable appears to have parted either at or just below the latch itself with no 'broken end' to try and snag.
They have some calls into a local Porsche dealer with questions but believe they will end up having to go in through the hood, ruining it of course.
I've asked about going in through the bottom but they tell me the hole would have to be so large to get access it would impact other systems and possibly the structural integrity.
Anyone have experience pulling the bumper? not sure that would be cheaper, I know the right way is to release it from the trunk of course.
On another note, anyone have thoughts on a fair value for the car in this condition... KBB has a 'fair' condition value of around $12K. The convertible top doesn't raise and lower electrically any more and there are a couple other cosmetic dings. Other than that it runs fine and has a clutch with less than 10k miles.

Three Wheelin'
There were no emergency cables before the 1992 MY.
I bookmarked this thread some time ago, apparently someone had some success with going through the bottom, without making the hole much larger:

There's GOT to be a better way than butchering the hood.

I appreshate the help so far.
it seems like most of the stuff is for the rear (engine bay) and not for the "boot"
again i don't have the car so im not very familar with the system but when this happens it bsaicly the eltric motor is either shot or the wire has broken
if that is true then is there a wire diagram that shows the route of the cable so i can try spliceing some power to it ?

This is a picture of my hood latch. As you can see, I installed an emergency cable (it was missing on my car) plus I added a back-up clamp to prevent the cable from ever slipping through. The only way you can get into the trunk is through the bottom of the trunk. Either drill an additional hole or go through the vent holes that have them rubber plugs. Then look at moving the mechanism in the picture to open your hood.

Just found this picture I took of the cable - hope this will help. Good luck:
