Trailer hitch
Well, I do know that there is an aluminum plate behind the bumper cover around the area of the licence plate. Some have taken off the cover, cut the cover and then used the lic. plate to cover the hole when not in use. The aluminum is stronger than plastic and for some it's do-able force wise. For others, in theory it is too much force on the aluminum bumper part. My thoughts were that if I'm gently pulling a rolling, lightweight trailer, then not a problem.
Procedure:
Remove the rear bumper assembly, then remove the plastic that surrounds the aluminum rectangular extrusion.
You may have to remove the tow hook attachment point.
I used a 3” x 23” x 3/8” thick steel plate to put inside the bumper, it will have to be bent slightly to conform to the bumper. I drilled and tapped two holes in the steel plate to attach it to the bumper. For the hitch, I drilled two holes thru approximately 7” apart and up about 1” from the bottom of the plate, these holes need to be larger than the bolts you will use to secure the hitch to the bumper. I used ½” bolts and nuts, the nuts were grade 8 and welded on the inside of the plate. You will have to drill two larger holes in the plastic behind the license plate for the hitch to go thru, see picture of hitch with spacers.
NOTE: The aluminum brackets that are riveted to the rectangular extrusion and attach to the car can crack and break (after 2 years and many hard miles on my car). They fit on the extrusion with a gap between, I used sheet stock to fill the gap and drilled four holes thru each bracket and bolted it to the bumper with grade 8 bolts then locktited. This has worked OK so far.
I have a couple of photos but they really only give you an idea of what it all looks like. If you want, msg me and I'll send it to you...

In my '89 owner's manual, there is the description of the control light in the clock face for the trailer blinkers. I would guess the hitch was an option (?). I know it was until '89 on the Carrera, not on the turbo.
I have a trailer hitch on my car that i made - It bolts on to the bumper mounting bolts on the underside of the car behind the engine. You can see picks at this link - on second page at bottom -

Hi Dwane, if you a search past posts, there is a company that makes a 964/993 hitch at a fair price. They were on sale at some point this year.
I downloaded the installation instructions, and as I recall, they installed with the rear tow hook. Will see if I can find the link.
Best,
Matt

It was a Curt hitch - see link attached. Mounted to the tow hook and bumper support behind the bumperettes.

Here's the real deal (no 964 listed thou, only 993):

Here is what can happen if you attach your hitch to the rear reinforcement bar.
This bumper bracket is attached to the bar with 4 rivets, but the bracket itself can fatigue over time.
Some people reinforce this bracket with through bolts, however, the 964 rear bumper was never meant to tow with. It was only meant to minimize damage from a rear end collision.

Designed to mount to the 993 centre tow hook and behind the bumperettes. Dwane, we'd have to compare the 964 bumper layout.
Best,
Matt
